Default DRC built TH400

I'm STRONGLY considering a t56 to TH400 swap but am NOT very up to speed on Auto's or TH400's so I have a few questions. There's a sale/trade pending so I need info kinda quick.

1. How many gears does a TH400 have?
2. With stock gears from an M6 (3.42's??), will driving 60mph put me in the neighborhood of around 4k rpm?
3. Will I be okay with stock M6 gears or should I go to 3.73's?
4. DRC...who are they and what's their rep?
5. Will a hurst 1/4 stick shifter fit with the manual leather shift boot?
6. Will a Spohn Chromoly DS that has a 1350 U-joint fit on my stock 10bolt?
7. If the TH400 doesn't come with a transbrake, can I add one later w/o TOO much trouble?
8. TCI 3800 stall with a 224ish -> 228ish cam? Too much stall for that cam?
9. Valve body style? Automatic/Manual, Full manual, or Automatic? What's the differences and what's recommended for a DD with occasional track visits? I obviously don't know what it is.
9. Will I have to drill into my radiator for a B&M transcooler?
10. Gears...what gears are recommended for the TH400? Keep in mind this will see a lot of daily driving.
11. Electronic control? Will I be able to programmatically change shift points, firmness with HPT or EFI Live or is all mechanical and part of the shift kit?

1 3 speed
2 Not that high, I believe like 70mph would be about 3300rpm
3 I would stay 3.42s if you do alot of street, your losing od with the 400
4 no clue about drc
5 hurst should fit i saw pics somewhere
6 spohn offers different versions, just contact them
7 transbrakes are in with the vb, like 220 or so for a vb with a brake
8 cant really help ya here
9 manual vb and no need for a kickdown, but if you go auto vb, then you need to use a 93 throttle bottle with the hook up for the kickdown
2nd 9 lol) No drilling, they come with tiers that mount them or bolt it on somehow
10 You could go more... but no od so not great for hwy use with more than what ya got
11 its a non electric trans

Also Id stay 3500 or so tops for stall... not too much for for a daily driver.

Depending on the stall: with a 3800 stall I was going 65@3400RPM, with a 3400 stall I am at 3200 RPM; 3.42 gears

With a 4000 stall and 3.73 gears I am around 3100 at 60 MPH.
I'm using a 4k stall on a stock cam LT1 so.......
If using the car as a daily driver keep your rear gear ratio 3.42 or below.
You can use just about any shifter you want but you will have to fabricate it into the car if you know what I mean. I run a B&M Pro Stick and just went the easy route and run an aluminum cover on it.
I have a reverse manual valve body with a transbrake, the brake is not hooked up yet so I am not tempted to grenade the rear. I love the RVMB but you have to pay attention, its just like driving a stick car, you shift it all the time.

Would you or someone mind explaining the valve body's to me? I don't know what a reverse manual valve body is or how it compares to other types. Any links for me to read up on that?

Reverse manual valve body basically switches the direct of 1 2 3 gears. 1st is where 3rd is and you shift back from first instead of foward. Also you take full control of the shifting, like a manual with no clutch. I'm using one on my 400 with a ratchet shifter.

You always HAVE TO take control with a reverse manual valve body? There's no drive that you can keep it in?

All manual valve bodies (forward or reverse) you have to shift yourself all the time.
The automatic function is completely eliminated.

the manual valve body sounds freaking sweet! I'm not so sure that going 3200ish RPM at 65 will be much fun when I'm on the highway everyday.

Depends on stall speed and gears too...

They do have auto/manual vb's where you can shift yourself or let the trans do it... but I never personally used one.

Also some have engine braking in 2nd but not 1st... so when you downshift, if you go to first, it just coasts.

Go with a 3.23 rear gear and a 28 inch diameter tire and it won't be bad at all.
My 3100 RPM is with a 26 inch diameter tire and 3.73s. With street tires traction is fleeting....... I have to run a DR to even think about hooking up.

I calculated it out, that my car with 4.10 gears and stock hieght tires will be 3500 at 65 with no converter slip, so it's reasonable to think that it will be about 3700. Now that seems like alot, but I am planning on putting 28 inch tires on the back, ans will be swapping to 3.73's when I put the bottle on my car as I'll be running out of gear with the 4.10's that I am sure of. Those 2 factors, plus the fact that my car is NOT a daily driver by any means and only sees a highway trip of about 20 to 30 miles every now and then is why I am not concerned. I do however, plan to drive it to the track, a 80 mile trip one way once I have the car sorted out, so that I can say I drove to the track, blasted off a 10.xx on motor on pump gas, and drove home. Keeping speeds down to about 55 also helps the RPM situation a ton, I don't remember the exact #, but it was a good amount.


If you are putting the th400 in a daily driver, I'd suggest 3.42 or 3.23 gears, and a stall that's 3500 or less. They won't be the optimum for the track, but will make the rpm that the car is at all the time alot more livable. The only other option, is to go to a taller tire

3.5 gears, 25.6" tall tires = 3500 rpms at 75 mph

I now rock the 2.75 gears and 65 mph is 2500 rpms Suprisingly I can still blow the nittos off from a 70mph roll bad enough I have to abort.

the rvm will also run the line pressure way up good for racing also the 400 has an excellent part for a transbrake the reverse band it is almost unbreakable

I can hook you up with a good 3200 stall converter... that has 20 street miles if your interested.

What you are saying is a little disturbing to me... as with my M6 and the 4.10's, 65 mph in 4th (1:1 like th400 3rd) is about 3500 rpm.. there's that much converter slip to make the car run up to 3500 with 3.5 gears? What kind of converter do you have? I'm hoping mine's got alot less slip then that... it was built to be put behind a 1100 hp nitrous ls1 setup in a 3200 lb car and stall at about 5000, but be as close to locked at the big end as possible, we're hoping that with my 500 rw that I'll probably be around it should eb more like a 4000 off teh bottle, and with a 150 hit about 4600.

So I can drive on the highway at 65 mph while ONLY at 2500 rpms if I have 2.75's? The stall would have to be pretty small too wouldn't it? Something in the area of 3000?

Isn't the car a slug in first with 2.75's and a TH400?
