Default how much restriction on the stock ws6 muffler?

on a big cam/head setup, how much would a stock SS/WS6 (round tips) catback be holding back. it seems to push a lot of air at idle, but im wondering what im losing past that.

Considering you are making som serious power, I would suggest getting a higher velocity setup with greater scavenging and smoother flow. Stocker might be holding you back from 5-8 rwhp at the most probably.

even the flowmaster is regarded as flowing better than stock and i've heard reports of 20 hp or more being freed up by opening a cutout. that would mean the stock is even worse. i'd say more like 15-20 hp.

I was being reasonable. And it very well may be near 20. I would never expect to get what is advertised though.

Of course a cut-out will give you some power. With it comes the sacrifice of torque. Sure does kick *** when it happens though. Those 5 guys out there running around with the 10rwhp addition because of a port job on the TB.

oh i didn't mean anything by my comment, i wasn't trying to call you a liar or anything. it's just when i do mods, i like to look at the minimum horsepower gain and, in this case, the maximum horsepower loss. i like to go in thinking worst-case-scenario, that way i'd likely be impressed by the results instead of disappointed. and yes, i'd recommend a cutout with any catback since they'll never flow as well as an open cutout. that being said, i must order one soon. i just got my $1900 paycheck deposited. too bad i owe 8 grand to school...

LT's Stock catback and a cut out is the way to go! Quiet when you want screams when you want. And all stock mufflers will be very restrictive but if its the stealth feeling your going for you cant beat it

well, its pretty quiet at cruise, but as soon as i get on it, man is it loud.

if its only 5-8 rwhp im losing then its no big deal. if its 20+rwhp, then i may consider changing it out. i already had cutouts, kind of a pain. plus they are raspy as hell.

im thinking turndowns before the axle. wonder if i could get a true dual setup as quiet as stock but flows like a cutout. hmmm. i just dont want it too loud

well, true duals look a bit expensive for my taste right now. how much did paul do yours for?

FLP has cutouts built into their offroad pipes now. unfourtuantly they are 300 bucks. and i would need 2 electric cutouts to keep the sound down around town. i imagine just cracking them a little would be rediculously loud. i had their turndowns with my old cam and i was so loud it made my ears bleed

or i can do 1 cutout and 1 electric plate for like 200 bucks. but it will still rasp like crazy.

what are my options for a good exhaust thats not real loud for under 500 bucks? under 600? anything cheap anymore?

Do a cut out. My friend opened up his cutout when the car was on the dyno, he mad 40rwhp. He was flowing through the stock muffler when the cutout was closed. For the money, go for a cutout. If you don't want to spend the money on and electric one, just go with a manual one with the plate and three bolts.
