Heard the news today at HMP, they say he was doing about 120 or so and hit the wall. I also heard that he has been racing for about 20 years

Finish-line crash kills driver at Houston Raceway

Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Local race car driver Rockey Keyes died Saturday from injuries suffered during a finish-line crash at the Houston Raceway Park in Baytown.

A dispatcher at the Chambers County Sheriff's Department said the 6 p.m. crash is under investigation.

Keyes was finishing an "otherwise routine time trial when the vehicle moved violently to the left and impacted the retaining wall," according to a statement on the raceway's Web site.

Keyes was a regular driver at Houston Raceway and other area tracks. Many of his friends and members of his racing family were at Saturday's race. Funeral services are pending.

The park's Web site said, "The owners, management and staff of Houston Raceway Park send their condolences to the family and the many friends of Rockey Keyes."

This is bad news, we lost another racer. Hopefully some of you guys that complain about having to put safety gear in your car and on yourselves might realize this can be a dangerous hobby. That safety equipment is to protect YOU. How much is your life worth?

Damn That horrible to hear, everyone that runs a decent time should have a cage and proper safety quipment in their car so this sort of **** does not happen.

Does anyone know exactly what happened? Did he cross the line and just get sideways?

If anyone hears exactly what caused the crash please post up. It may be something that we could all learn from.

I don’t want to start rumors or anything, I didn’t see it myself just saw the aftermath of it all. From everyone I talked to there yesterday (other drivers that saw it from either the return road area or the pit area) they all pretty much said the same thing about the accident.

Very sad day for everyone that was there yesterday.
