Default Auto Gear Shift Expertise Needed

Does anyone know about the workings of the auto gear shift?

Specifically, I'm looking for information about the shift lock, how the park neutral position (PNP) switch is controlled by the shift control cable, and what gear settings each of the 6 positions on the PNP switch represent.

The reason I ask, my 2001 Corvette auto gear shift seems to have malfunctioned and is displaying the following symptoms:
1. It can shifted without pushing the brake first.
2. There is no resistance moving from Park through Drive.
3. The PNP switch is not being properly controlled by the shift control cable. Park through Drive do not cause the shift control cable to move enough to switch the PNP to a new position, but 1-3 do cause some movement. However, going back front 3 to Park does not move the PNP switch back to what I believe is the park position.

Looks like my shift control cable failed...

If anyone has any pointers for removing the shift control cable I'd appreciate hearing them.
