Yep, it says GTO down on the ground effect. The Holden Monaro had a model called the GTO (similar to the Pontiac Firebird and its Trans Am model)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the location of the GTO badge on the Pontiac GTO is a signal light on the Holden Monaro.

I got a question...Why would a police dept make a cruiser yellow it just stands out more...

It's an HSV GTO. Holden Special Vehicles are like SVT in a sense. They took the Monaro and made a GTO and a GTS version of the cars. Essentially Monaro's on steroids. The moniker has nothing to do with the Pontiac that we get stateside though. That car actually has a LOT of street cred in Australia. And all the marked cars down there apparently have crazy bright coloring.

They tend to do that so they stand out , your not going to misbehave if you see a cop car and if you missed one of those things you shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a car because you’re blind . They do have unmarked cars as well and the regular white cop cars .

Tell me about it :bang: but at least we in the West over here don't get them in V8's they are all 6's it's called money saving so anyone can get away from them until the chopper catches up with you and then :engarde: you are busted :judge: :judge:

I was thinking the same thing, crazy aussies. For some reason that car looks a hell of a lot better than our GTO. The spoiler and wheels are sweet. If that was the judge pontiac may have sold more cars.

The Australian Cops do their far share of hiding in bushes but they also use speed cameras that can book hundreds of people in a day doing a few mph over the posted speed limit , these tend to be hidden and the first you know about it is when you get the fine in the mail .

The car in the picture isn’t a standard Monaro , they have used the HSV (Holden special vehicles) version that comes with better brakes, wheels & tyres ,suspension and a different body kit . It also has a bigger price tag .

One day it will be used as a taxi.

NEVER.
Majority of taxis in our land are LPG (propane) powered, with the LPG tank mounted in the trunk.

How useful would a 2 door taxi with absolutely no luggage space be ?

The vehicle in question was a 2002 HSV GTO Coupe, that HSV 'donated' to the Victoria Police as a public relations exercise. It was used in the Melbourne Traffic Management Unit (inner CBD) response area.

It certainly elicited a lot of public interest.

As for the yellow colour, it was simply the brightest colour that HSV had and it made the car stand out even more than usual.

Most of our traffic cars in Victoria are white, however, around 20 Specially Marked Anti Road Toll (SMART) cars are put into service each year. These have been blue, silver and poo yellow(I can't remember the colour).

Most Vic traffic cars are now Holden Commodore SS and some Ford XR6T/XR8s thrown in for good measure.

Approximateley 75% of the traffic fleet is marked, with 25% being unmarked cars.

Cheers,

Macca

Interesting information. Kinda sucks we can't get past a stock GTO let alone a HSV even if it is an amusing color. I'd probably so impressed if they had one here it would be not worth arguing the ticket for.

TAXI!!!!!!!!!!

They would be about as useful as the heroin addict taxi drivers in Albuquerque who decide they need to take a 20 mile detour around the entire city to drive you 10 blocks down the road.

Then when you finally get to the AFB you have to walk half a mile with 150 lbs (68.18 kilos) of luggage because th A-hole cab driver is driving with a loaded gun in the car and is trying to drive onto a nuclear research AFB....

:emb: ...sorry about that I have issues... :(

It's the checker looking vinyl on the side that sorta kills the look. Otherwise it would be terrifying to suddenly have behind you if you decided to take a Crown Vict for a ride on the back roads.

Definately a lot faster than the Crown Vict or the v6 Impala.

Be patient with my American brothers. Some of them still think Pontiac/GM came up with the name "GTO". I guess that other silly GTO from Italy didn't count.

If GM was smart, they'd slap an Impala badge on those and make them into 9C1. Police depts would eat them up. I know it's going to be a Pontiac G8 here in the states, but a Pontiac cop car just sounds weird... unless it's in Smokey And The Bandit.
