Default Should you clearcoat over a polished lip?

I have a set of SS 10 spokes that I have been working on. I painted the wheels myself and have polished the very outer lip where the wheel weights are hammered on. My question is; should I clearcoat over the polished lip or should I mask off the polished lip and then clearcoat the wheels. I know aluminum is not supposed to rust but I live in a coastal environment where even my stainless steel barbeque grill is beginning to rust. I want the finish to last. Thanks for your time.

You would have to get a clear that can be used over aluminum. From what I understand, there is a certain automotive clear you can use, although I don't know what manufacturer it is.
