Default tightest converter???

i'm a newb and i have a few questions:

1. what is this "loose" feeling that stalled a4 owners talk about?

2. what is the tightest high stal converter?

3. for a daily driven street car that sees the track once a month at best, what would you recommend?

lid, longtubes, ory, cutout, and a tune

The loose feeling that comes with a higher stall TC feels like the tranny is slipping. Usually the higher the stall, the more it slips. Sometimes when sitting on a very slight incline, I don't have to use the brake. With my SS4000, It takes about 2000 rpm to get moving from a stop. The Yank SS Series would be a great choice for your mods. What gear ratio do you have? If you stick with the same mods, the SS36000 would be a good choice. If you start digging into the motor, then SS4000 fits the bill.

Why dont i ever see many reccomendations for precision industries vigilante verters when they were the first to build the best converters seen for 4l60e's way back in the mid-90's? They have long been in the game and just what is it that makes people think that yanks are in any way better? Please tell me? And precision also allows you one free stall change if you decide you need one. I know yanks are the only company that can be compared to PI but now all of a sudden their better? I mean im a 6-spd guy but i have had a vig in my Impalla SS since it was new in 95 and it still remains an awesome trouble free hole-shotting ****. Again why is a yank better? I just totaled my ta and am swapping my drivetrain into a SS camaro and will be going auto. Guess which converter will be getting my money! Buy the way the PI verter has a STR of 2.53 on their 3200 and it gets better as you go higher.Call em and ask em.

I don't remember reading anyone here saying Yank is better. All he was asking was for reccomendations and I gave mine. I have had nothing but success with Yank and will never look back. Dude get of the soapbox.............

One of the keys to minimizing looseness is having lower gears ... 3.23 would be the highest ratio you'd want to have in this scenario. The other is picking a converter with a higher STR ... so, in the 3000-3200 range about 2.2, 3400-3600 - 2.5, 4000 - 2.7.

I have a Vig and love it. I think Yank are great too. It was a difficult decision.

With a loose converter you will have to rev higher to get to a certain speed. When I take off from a stoplight I will rev to almost 3k and hover around 2100 before it locks up. I run a Fuddle 4400 with a 2.5 STR and stock 2.73. STR is the amount that the converter multiplies the torque under WOT. I like a loose converter and think that 410s would help out a lot but with the motor I plan it's not worth investing in the rearend I have now.

And I don't see many 9sec cars with vig converters. Usually I see Coan, Yank or others.

im running a Fuddle, and havec not had an issue yet. It may not mean much when compared to companies that have been in the business for years upon years, but John seems to know what hes talking about and Im able to pull off some very nice track times with a simple 3600.

STR stands for Stall Torque Ratio. Basically, STR is torque multiplication. If a car has a higher STR, it will feel tighter on the street because the converter is multiplying the input torque by a higher number. It will also give a harder punch out of the hole. STR is created by two components inside the converter moving at different speeds. Shortly after launch, those components reach an equal speed eliminating STR completely.

Worse/cheaper clutch material than Yank.

They are more of a mass producer than Yank. If you have 8 seperate guys working on projects or only a couple of guys on projects which company can keep closer specs?

2.17 str (according to vig). actual stall speed is normally between 3600-3800.

i see all the 10-9 sec cars with 4400+ stall converters of different brands

look a little closer

you'll see stall is more important than brand

and you got a 3200!!

i bought a used PI VIG verter off ebay, and was junk. send it off to PI and they rebuilt it, and made it a 3800 stall. and guess what, its a 3800 right on the money. lol

i didn't have that kind of money for a YANK at the time, but the next one i buy will be a yank, which may be soon.

and if PTC made an LS1 verter, i would buy it right now, cuz i have one of PTC's in my nova, and has well over 700 passes on it, and pulls consistant short time no matter what.
