M6: Did you balance your FW+PP?
I have never done it and it seems like most people don't. Is it really only important when reving really high like 7k+ ???

well usually when i buy a whole new clutch and flywheel assembly i just throw it in....but my last clutch *caugh*spec3POS*caugh*
not only did the flywheel come machined incorrectly (it was cut on an angle, only half the disc made contact with it!) but it was also not balanced at all....i had my spec3 in and out of my car a few times, one of which times was to get it balanced! it wasn't even close to balanced, just cruise'n around made my dashboard feel like it was going to rattle off!!

It is foolish not to get the flywheel and PP balanced. For $50, it's worth every cent. On my Spec V install the flywheel was dead on and the PP needed a 1/4" nut welded on. The machinist said it was only out minimally. What was interesting was he said that the balance changes on some PP as as the rpm's go up, and that really makes them a bitch to balance, and that they are never fully balanced at all rpm's.

You should always balance your FW/PP assembly. You've got the whole god damn car apart... Take 2 minutes and pull the flywheel off. It takes all of 10 minutes for a machine shop to balance it.
I used my factory flywheel/Spec 3 clutch. It just took a little grinding of the PP and it was mint.
I hate half assed short cuts like this...

BAD ***, where did you get yours balaced? I'm from Derry.. lived in Hudson for a short time too. I'll be back in NH in two years and it'll probably be time for new clutch by then so I'd like to get it balanced since it's probably a good thing to do. Odd that we've been members for 4 years and I never noticed your location. Nice car. Those are the best rims for Fbods

I had my LS7 clutch kit/flywheel balanced just for peace of mind on my C5, after such a big job to do i would have shot myself if I had a big vibration after it was done and all back together...

Well interestingly enough this is the ( cant remember exactly now too many beers as I am celebrating engine install tonight )
anyways this is the "many'eth" stick car I have owned and my second six speed.
I have never in the past sent out a clutch/flywheel for balancing BUT I have run a few set ups the required proper installation re alignment relationship between p plate and flywheel and whatnot. Two that come to mind were a Hays set up i ran on a muncie backed low 11 sec 6700 shift RPM 427 Nova and it was smooth as silk and second was an LT1 t56 behind a mild 13 second carbed 350 in a camaro I built. I used a stock clutch and came to learn the hard way that there are yellow paint "daubs" on the flywheel and p plate that you have to match up as closely as possible for correct balance. Of course i was ignorant of this at the time and it had a nasty shudder around 3500 RPM. After many dealer inquiries ( no web access for me in 95 ) I found out about this paint marking business and corrected the installation issue and all was well once again.
That brings me to tonight in which I installed an LS7 clutch and there are paint markings all over both the flywheel and p plate and nothing really matching info I learned on the LT1 style t56 nor anything i could find searching LS1tech or any google hits so I guessed. Please see post here for more info;

So as far as balancing concerns go and considering the many here who have/are using LS7 set ups I would really like to know the scoop on this. Otherwise my vote is balancing is never bad that I can think of but I have never balanced a flywheel and clutch together. Many set ups and never had issue aside from said t56 problem.

I would want it balanced. I just pulled my tranny and the clutch looks pretty smoked. I plan on getting it freshened up and re balanced.
I would think that its a MUST DO kinda thing.
