Default So I was looking into getting a turbo.....

I've been doing ALOT of research on 2002 ls1 Turbo kits, and I was wondering what you guys would suggest. I'm not looking for a no air conditioned 10 Mpg 8 second race car, but more like a daily driven 10-11 second car(at the most) with air conditioning/affordable setup anyways.... what would you guys suggest? I noticed the STS looks pretty cheap, but I was told by many reliable sources that the rear mounts undergo serious turbo lag, which makes me feel like I would just be wasting my money if I went that route. I just want something that will sound wicked as hell!!! with the ***** to back it up. most important of all though...reliabile/affordable

thanks guys,

James

I believe some company in Austrailia is working on a new setup. Not sure how long the process will be but it is sounding promising so far. There is a thread about it some where. I am keeping my eyes on it!

whoever told you about that is just ignorant. sts builds full boost around 3k. it cost 4k for the base system, which everyone usually upgrades..so keep that in mind, fi isn't cheap, plus you'll need a dyno tune.

That is sort of an oxymoron.

In General:
--The more power you want, them more it costs.
--The more power you get, the less reliable your car becomes.

if you want a 10 sec daily driver for "cheap"

get a 150wet shot, 9" rear, built tranny, suspension mods, full bolt ons, and slicks.

if you want a 10 sec turbo car that you can daily drive....do the reasearch on what it will cost to build...if you cant do all the labor your self add another 2k at least. than take that amount and double it.....than once you get that much start building the car.

and about the sts kit....yes the "basic" kit is 4k....but you need fuel and tune....and if he is looking for 10's well he is gonna need ALOT more that just the basic kit.

O yea not trying to scare you away at all.....honestly i LOVE my turbo kit...but if i had to do it again...i wish i would have had double the budget...sucks having the power to run 11's and the traction to run high 12's....but MAN does that turbo sounds GREAT!

Total? I disagree, the TTi Street kit and most TurboZone Kits are under 7k off the top of my head. I don't recall what the Ohio guy's priced theirs at.

But ya to the thread starter, I think you have the wrong idea. You can't just stick a turbo on one of these cars and expect it to be an 11, 10, 9, or 8 second car. Crap I'd be happy right now if my car would hit bottom 12's. It is fairly simple to make power...it is hard to control it and not break things every time out. You are not going to hit 10's with a turbo for under 10k. You need to do ALOT more research if you think you can.

Honestly if those are your ET goals I'd go H/C and spray, you can keep all your options and have alot less invested. No matter what you use to make power, you have to harness it. That means a good tranny, rear end, tires, suspension, etc.

Some very good suggestions here. You can buy into a turbo kit for a decent price. It's the other parts, tune and breakage that becomes an issue.

We are offering our single Street-Zone kit that RETAINS A/C this month for $4,250.00. This is a complete nuts and bolts kit with tubular headers. You would only need a turbo to put it on. We also sell turbos.

YES, THIS KIT RETAINS A/C !! So many people miss that point, I had to point it out again.

I agree...

Can't skimp on this crap... I spent about $3500 on my setup, but that was DIY setup, and doesn't work as well as I would like, so I am having to go back and fix the flaws in my design. Anyway... Plan on spending a GRIP of money to go fast. If you want a DD, for "cheap", get a good shot of nitrous, and a good drivetrain, and call it done until you can afford FI, it is a money pit!

ATI D1-SC kit with the SDCE 8 rib upgrade and you WILL hit your goals of a 10-11 sec reliable DD....and pretty trouble free too.

If you didnt have to dump out $7k all up front, I would have went that route, if I knew then what I know now. Kinda hard to piece together a SC setup.

Ah but for how much is the question? Im with the thread starter on the goals. lol So this is right up my alley. However, im well aware of the supporting mods needed to hit those kind of ET's. If these cars have some traction issues stock, then lol with that kind of power just imagine how much worse it gets. Plus, our crap 10-bolt adds to the costs.

I'm just curious though, because I kept thinking procharger, but whats the low end on that like? Does it sink you in your seat when you hit the gas or is it more gradual?

Procharger and a stall will roast the tires just about anytime you hit the gas, mine was pretty insane.

Carl, my procharger kit ran me ~4100, SDCE set up about 700, FMIC set up ~5-600, still well below 7K and I was going 11.1's up here where the DA sits at 7000ft.

Turbo set up, blew past 7k faster than PSJ driving to the dyno...and I still haven't broke out of the 12s turbocharged.

NO Noir, 11.1's for about 5400 and I live a mile high. If I was running the car at sea level I'd been deep into the 10's on the same set up. Fuel system was not added in. And yep I barely took out the stock tranny after 8yrs and just replaced it with a new stage 4 4l60e, and I'm still running a 10 bolt. 1.5-6 60fts on ET drags. Yes it blows up every now and then but its easy to fix back up. One day i'll get a 12 bolt.
