i usually run mobile 1 5w-30 extended performance although i change it every 3k miles, I just run it just in case i forget and because i have 100K+ on the car. It really doesn't matter what you run 0w, 5w, or 10w as long as it's xW-30!

I run heavier oil since it so hot and also since i'm blown. 10 w 30 minimum here. I feel the 5 w 30 is just too light and will get by the rings too easy.

Mobil 1 10w 30 in summertime, 5w 30 in fall/winter.

the heavy oil will give you a greater chance to starve bearings of oil.

Explain?

I run a 20w50, but I run it for a reason ;) I used Redline now, but Im going to switch to RP because noone carries RL anywhere.

grammar > you :jest:

Anyways I never understood why people used 20w-50? When I worked at a lube center, it was always the crazy rednecks in their Exploders, Deathscorts, Taurass, V6 GM Trucks/SUVs, or just random people with like a Camry who wanted that shit. Can someone explain why?

With our climate, if you use a thin oil, in the summer months its like water in the engine and wont cushin anything because our heat will thin it out really bad. All the thin oils are for is when its very cold out, they will flow better on startup. Since we dont get cold, we dont need the thin oils.

I use a 20w50 because when I built my motor, I used a tab of a looser clearence on the bearings because I built it for a 200+ shot. If you build a forged motor with stock clearences and spray the piss out of it with thin oil, youre going to squish the oil from the bearings and risk burning them ultimally killing all the bearings.

RP 10w-30

It doesn't take a thin oil to give you good startup properties.

I remember being nervous about the "0" in the GC 0w30, until Patman mentioned that it's actually a very thick 30 weight, almost a 40 weight. Definately thicker than Mobil 1 5w30 I used to put in.

i run the thick stuff because 90% of the time my car is on, its banging off the rev limiter in 2-4th gear going around a corner.

i also run about 1 qt extra to help slosh.

i would never run 20w 50 in a stoclk ls1.... it says not to right in the owners manual (it really does) but if you built it to run on it then thats a diff. story...... im finally makin the switch to mobile1 5w 30.. thanks for the reply's

I wouldnt either. I tried it and it rattled pretty bad. I did run with 10w30 stock.

I like i run Mobile1 10w-30. But w/ oil prices I went over to valvoline since i work at a parts store and thats what we carry and I can get it w/ a discount. I was thinking of going to 5w-30 but it would make such a small difference between the 2 Ill just stick w/ 10w-30

We carry Amsoil and i would LOVE to run that stuff, but damn its expensive no matter what!

I was advised by Allan Futral of FUTRAL MOTORSPORTS to run 20w-50 after my cam install since my motor has 80K on it.
