How to test a solenoid?

is there a way to test a shift solenoid to verify that it is working before installing it?

Momentarily connect the solenoid across 12V using a fused jumper wire.

the best way to test it is the alluminum block made to test them. install the solenoid onto it apply 30psi compressed air it will exhaust until 12v is applied. apply 12v for a short time if no air leaks during that time then the solenoid is good.
