Default fuel gauge

My fuel gauge is acting up. When I start the car the fuel gauge will get to a certain point then it will jump to 'full" or "empty" or fluctuate in between. After driving for awhile it seems to go back to normal. Any ideas what this could be?

the sending unit is going out. same thing happened to me in my camaro. did what happened to you guys for a month or so then went out. to fix it you have to purchase a whole new fuel pump assembly(at least that what 2 dealers told me when i got quotes from the shop i was working in) they wouldnt sell just the sending unit itself.
