Default Ram HD. Need shim??

I was reading that you need to install a shim behind the slave. Is this true. What would happen if you didn't. Thanks for any responses.

What does the shim do exactly? I also read that if you have an adjustable master cylinder than you don't need the shims...

The reason I'm wondering is because I have the Ram HD clutch ready to go in, but I don't know if I need the shims or not. Please help

Yeah, it's resurfaced. That's the thing, I don't have a shim. I'm planning on an adjustable master cylinder so I think it should be fine without the shims...
