Default 6.0 or 5.3 heads on a 6.0

Im putting a 6.0 in my 01 Z28, it will have a TR224 cam and I have the choice of putting on 5.3 heads or the keeping the original 6.0 heads. No boost so I was wondering which head would be a better choice.

the 6.0 heads have intake runners like the LS6 which flow better than the 5.3's which are designed like the ls1's not sure what the CR difference is though. it will determine what head gaskets you use and if you mill them or not, but i would go with the 6.0 if it were me and mill and thinner gasket.

you will get a little better flow from the 6.0 heads but you will raise the compression ratio with the 5.3 heads. i think the 5.3 heads flow 190 cfm vs 210 on the 6.0 heads.

I finally found the specs on the 2 after a 20 minute or so google search. The 6.0 heads def outflow the 5.3 heads. They actually had better numbers than the LS6 heads. SO I will stick with the 6.0 heads and mill them .010 or so for a lil CR bump. Thanks for the replies guys.

If they are 72 cc, you might want to mill a little more to get as close to 8.5 DCR as possible.

How much can you mill the 317 heads? I want to put them on the stock 6.0. How much higher could I get the compression ratio.

What effect will milling have on the exhaust manifolds and valvetrain. It lowers the head on the engine so will there be issue's?

Any time you assemble an engine you should check the pushrod length, just to be sure. Bending pushrods is bad...

As for the exhaust, a few hundreds of an inch MAX should not throw off your exhaust manifolds enough to ever notice.

there are several guys on here selling 241 heads. cheap. found some brand new never ran heads for $150 plus shipping. you will have a higher compression ratio becuase of the smaller chamber and you wont loose an piston to valve clearance. id highly suggest using the cheap 241 heads that are rather undesirable on your motor rather than to spend money and mill your heads.

So what about going with the 243 heads with a good port job. Will they flow as well as the 317s. Will the smaller runners produce more torque? I know i'll be running nitrous later so which head is better for that. I'm sure the 5.3 truck heads can be found reasonably cheap too.
