View Full Version : 150 miles to tank... bad?

Hi, I have a 2000 SS M6 Camaro, basically with just a lid and catback. 74k miles, and have consistently been getting 150 miles to a full tank. Recently, my car has been pulling an SES code of p0137, what is strange however is the light goes off a day or two later (the light showed up twice so far). What steps should I take to diagnose this problem?

Thanks in advance.

do you run out of gas going this? are you sitting around in dead stop traffic? how many gallons are you putting in when you fill up? How are you figuring out that its that low?

:jest: Yeah same here. The Cobra doesnt get as good, but thats mainly due to the gearing. I can come close to 300 a tank with that if I baby her. Cars too damn loud at 5500-7000 and gas isnt cheap. :jest:

300 mph highway with no showing off is possible. I used to achieve this all the time when I was stock. If you show off forget 300 mph.

That's outrageous. I get 400 miles on 13.5gallons which works out to 29.629mpg on a completely stock 99 trans am with 90K miles all highway. That's without running out of gas when the light is on. Around town driving I have never gotten below 300 miles to a tank. Oh I forgot to mention that it's an auto with 3.42 gears. I don't know what's going on but I consistently see my modified WS6 get 25+mpg with an auto and several friends modified cars get far better gas mileage with a tune than almost any car posted thus far.

Yeah 150 is WAY too low. Like mentioned get a tune up quick. I know I was getting terrible gas mileage when my o2s went bad, but even then I still got more than 150 miles out of a tank.

i get more than 150 out of my untuned cam/head ss! if i drive highway for a tank i got 23 to the gallon. untuned.. thats incredible another reason the lsx engines fricken rule.. but then when i screw around town and take off and stuff its a different story i dont even want to know what i get in town

Lets see, I usually end up putting about 14 gallons in the tank when I fill it up, and at that point I have about 135 miles on the tank all together. So I figure about 150 miles give or take on it. Car seems to be running fine, aside from a rattling at low rpms like around 900-1200 rpm, and the p0137. I have cause to think its' the cats, but am unsure on the matter. In addition, my local dealership wants to charge me 120 bucks for the diagnostic fee, and will only cover the whole repair (cat warranty 8yr/80k) if they deem it neccesary. i.e. I get slammed with the 120$ fee if they don't think i need a new cat. In addition, it's virtually impossible to change my o2 sensors, I've tried, they won't come out, and the cats are in the way.

Your O2's will come out, you just have to put some serious effort into it. Its up to you, 150 Miles a tank and leave the O2's, or 250+ Miles a tank and change em. Your losing money if you don't do anything.

yea mines is pretty low...but not 150mpg low...more like 180mpg low...A4 stock everything...not with the turbo and 42lber's i wanna change my 02's front sensors for the hell of it and try checking the mileage cruising the whole time to see if i can get some decent mpg out of one tank... aand yea i gotta stay away from boost lol :jest:

Yeah, its wierd though in that it looks like the cats on my car are welded on differently than they were in my two old 99 SS's, in that the cats are flipped to prevent access with a crescent wrench.... any tips?

i get over 300 highway and close to 300 and close to it in the city if i keep it down and that's with no cats headers no air no egr and 4.10's

I think I call BS on that.

But anyways, yeah 150miles/tank is bad. One time I did that to about 5/8s tank.. so I used 3/8s and I went 150miles.

I usually average around 250miles/tank but I drive mainly city.

I wouldn't necessarily call bs on it. I get around 400 miles to a tank all highway and over 300 in town and i hav similar mods.

The worst Ive ever got on a tank was like 220ish but that was playin around all weekend and my car's an A4. The M6 cars get better mileage but anything bellow 200mpt is just WAY too low.

well ive never filled mine up bc gas weighs to much and my gas guage doesn't work 4 some reason so couldn't tell you.. but i hope mine is getting what yalls are getting :)

BKGarrison98TA
09-05-2006, 07:33 PM
the 98's have smaller tanks so it changes the miles/tank

even with my cam I get over 200 city and over 340 highway

that error code is the O2 sensor

if the cats are in weird it's probavbly not going to be covered under warantee since someone modded it, I would say just go LT's and new Y-pipe :D

and here i was thinking 250-280 in city stop and go traffic was bad :jest:
seriously though get what ever is setting that code fix and probbly a good tune up then go from there. was it always this bad?

I get around 180 city in my stock 01 SS M6 babying it... My supercharded cobra with 470rwhp got 250ish city... Why does this car suck so bad on gas?

blue02formula
09-06-2006, 12:05 PM
I can get 280 miles and only need 12-13 gallons to fill it up commuting. I have made it well over 320 on the highway and not been on empty. I have most bolt-ons and a 12 bolt with 4.11's with a M6, with 122,000 miles.

u should try skipping 3rd gear when your cruising around, a friend of mine did that for a full tank and got a extra 40 miles or something like that for the tank.

BAD2000TA
09-06-2006, 01:20 PM
I think a lot all comes down to how you drive. If I'm conservative, meaning short-shifting, use 6th gear for all speeds above 50, then I get between 250-270 per tank. However, if I play a little, meaning rev out in first and hit hard in second, then it drops to around 190-220 depending on how much playing around I do. Highway cruising for long distance is great in our cars. Everybody should be over 300 for 70mph, 6th gear cruise-control on driving. But, city driving is way different. Stop and go is terrible for fuel economy. Plus, there's always that temptation to hear that LS1!!

Well with a mix of 90% city and 10% highway I got 260 miles to a tank and my cats are dead!(waiting on my LT's and ORY!) My neddle dosent even move below the F line untill like 35 miles into the tank!

EurospecCamaro
09-08-2006, 01:17 PM
I get at least 200 to 300 miles.
You can save gas by turning off the engine when you are sitting
at a light you know is a long one, or when waiting for your
passenger. Its worked for me and is a trick that taxi drivers
in Europe have done for years.;

I consistently get 250-260 miles per tank, filling up as soon as the light comes on. It usually takes about 14 gallons. This is with a 60/40 hwy/city driving mix. I don't baby it, either. I go WOT at least once a day. My car is stock except for a lid and I've got 3.23s.
