Eastern Members - So I pulled my cats last night.

I got those stupid jethot slide in style cats. I pulled them out last night to see what kind of shape they were in. Actually they were pretty good but they are quite the restriction. Holding them up you can't see much light come through, they are not clogged though.
I ran the car with the cats out... HOLY CHIT! (sorry no video, next time)
The car was so loud, I would love to cruise around like that for a little while, but it's a guarenteed ticket. The car was just mean sounding and the cam was so much more pronounced. So I put them back on knowing it would get me in trouble.
Now I know these things must be robbing me of power and the car is too loud without them, I am thinking of getting the TSP catted Y pipe which probably flows better w/ the Magnaflow cats and it should bolt right up to the Jethot headers. Any opinions? Any of you guys run that Y?

Leave out the cats and put a Bullit muffler in the I-pipe.That sound just dictates the power the Cats are killing you.

Also bring the car down without those Cats and see what the car really dyno's :)

I'm definately interested to see what it does, I was even thinking of pulling them the next time to the track. Don what do you recommend for a Bullit muffler?
I just saw these Dynomax ones

14-24219 Dynomax Bullet Muffler, 3" inlet/outlet, 23.25" long $56.99
That's it.I sell them cheaper than that though.

Hopefully that quites it down enough, I bet it will still be pretty loud, no cats smells too.
Do you recommend welding it in or clamping it?
My other option is to see if I could fab up some type of pre-cat cutout system, but I don't think there is enough room unless I trim down the cutouts.

cats suck, why dont you hollow them out and run headers/gutted cats/gmmg and if its too loud as Don said toss a bullet dynomax muffler in the I pipe? Either that or you can just have some magnaflow cats welded in place of the jet hots. I hear their new metallix cats (or similarly named) flow almost as well as no cats.

bullets make a difference, they make the car sound smoother and quite it down. i would say do the bullet and take the cats off like don said.

I'm liking the Bullit idea. Beleive me it's too loud without the cats, sounds like the world is coming to an end. Plus driving around a stalled auto up hills in my town would be like dialing the town cops and telling them hey there I go come get me.
Ideally I would like to keep the sound about the same, thats why I figured just better cats would do the trick in getting me some missed power. The TSP setup is ready to bolt in and seemed like a good deal for the $.
I could also just go the Bullit route and if it's still too loud I can just leave em' in pluss the Bullit I guess.
Do you guys know if you weld that in or just clamp it?

If you want power= forget Cats unless they are hollowed out. Bullit should be welded in.
or another route is to ditch the Catback and put on a quieter one with a cutout.(which is what most people are doing)

BTW-I'm sure your car is no where as loud as Z28 Ninja's and he drives his everyday.

My car is pretty loud. I drive it all the time. Just idle past cops and slowly accelerate when they are in the area. I do have cats but also have the old school LoudMouth. Its a completley hollow "muffler". It is so loud that is ALWAYS the first comment I get.

Definately not too loud for a DD and you can get that wicked open headers sound by tossing a cutout in the I-pipe.

My car sounds louder than that with cats. Without the cats, I'm telling you it's a monster. The magnaflow sounds good though.
Hey Ninja, what kinda setup do you have?
I've heard a lot of loud ls1's but when me and my buddy Mike heard this we just looked at each other like "Damn". Don, you know how my car sounds, (link in sig, before heads) just imagine it twice as loud and raspier. It's tough to creep by the po-po with a stall.
I'm leaning towards the Bullit pipe though. I'm gonna have to think about it I guess.

Oh yeah, when we started it up I was thinking track only with how loud it was. No way you could "quietly" drive by a cop unless you lucked out and were coasting down a hill. LOL! Sounded great and stunk like crap though. I'd lean towards some good flowing cats personally so the smell isn't bad and the sound comes down a bit.

Well,you have a few choices.
Run Cats and lose power-quiter exhaust
Install bullit
Dump the loud GMMG exhaust and go Magnaflow/cutout.
I would go with #3 since you can probly get decent $$ for the GMMG used.
Take the Cats out next time you go to the track.I bet you'll get your 11.5 easilly.

Hmm I think I might go the Bullit option, its pretty cheap to try. Plus when inspection time comes I can still put the cats back in. I love my GMMG, but if worse came to worse I would sell it. Don I wouldn't mind having you or Dez do it, otherwise I can buy the pipe off you and have a local guy do it.

i have a 224 cam with long tubes, no cats and a single 18" bullet, almost straight pipes, and it is also a stalled auto. soon we will be putting in a bigger cam and i will still drive it a lot.

I know but it helps with the smell and definately the sound. If I drove into a place without them they would probably laugh.

I can imagine that being pretty loud. So you never got pulled over or harassed about noise?

I'd just do the bullit Danno i drove with headers no cats and loudmouth for a year and never was stopped for noise. The exhaust is on my buddies Z and he hasn't been stopped either.

Danno lives in the town right next to mine. In current form he will be pulled over if he drives through the center of my town...which is why he avoids the center and drives around it and out of the way. I have been pulled over in both of my vehicles for loud exaust (95 GMC Sierra and 95 Subaru Impreza) neither of which could even compete with dans current decibel level. The subarus muffler fell off and my truck has a custom dual exhaust but not that loud at all. Either way its too loud for the cops in our area. Unwanted attention leads to fines for exhaust and whatever else may be illegal on your car.
I dont have any better advice then what was given already but I would deffinately keep it reasonable. You have been lucky thus far...I wouldnt push it. It would suck if you had to go to court and turn her back to stock! And that DOES happen.

Dan where in central mass are you located? Im in Shrewsbury (right outside of worcester) and there are plenty of shops that dont care as long as you pass the OBDII scan (no ses lights). I got my sticker with the setup in that clip I posted no problem. I say gut your cats and toss in a cutout in the I pipe and then go with a rea quiet catback, like the magnaflow or even an slp dual/dual. The slp dual/dual is nice and tame and I think it would help daily driving it and then when you want it insanely loud uncork the cutout!

I'm right next to the Fitchburg/Leominster area. I really like loud car's but I know the cops don't. I'd prefer to keep my catback but if it came down to it I would probably swap it for a quieter setup and cutout like you said to have best of both worlds. I might try the Bullit route 1st, I guess I'll base my decision on the next time I go to the track, I'll pull the cats and if there are noticable gains I'll try quieting it down and worst case change the catback.
