Default So I talked to a machinest today about RAM HD clutches...

Like the title says I was talking to the machinest while he resurfaced my flywheel. He said that the clutch I was using was a "button type" and said that these are not street friendly at all. He said they destroy flywheels and are hard on your thrust bearings. He said that they just cant stand slipping, they either need to be engaged or disengaged. Anyone else have any insight on this? My other RAMHD was already in the mail so I didnt have a chance to change my mind. My old one lasted about 8,000 miles, and my flywheel needed to be resurfaced .040 IN to be back to a clean flat surface again. I'll get some shots of my pressure plate and clutch disc later once I get home.
Also on another side note, has anyone purchased the cheap slave cylinders from advance auto? On the net its 75 bucks, how much worse could they be than the stock GM one? I havent bought the slave yet so if anyone knows of anyone that could be superior that I could get ASAP as I want to finish this job this weekend and get my car on the road

Thanks again

My mechanic who is in his mid 50s called my SPEC 3 a "button clutch" (thoug he said nothing else that you noted). Just means there's not much play in the petal.

If you do the drill mod, any clutch can be a bit hard on the fly wheel, I've read on here.

Don't know about anything else.

Neither one of your mechanics/machinest know what the hell a button clutch is.
This is a button clutch

It weights somewhere betwene 6.5-8lbs.
That on in particular uses 2 or 3 4.5 inch clutch disks.

Thats what I figured. According to all the information on the RAM website their clutch is indeed one of the most streetable while still providing excellent grip. After reading everything on their site I'm very confident in my purchase.

Also according to RAMs website their clutches DO NOT require a break-in period!! Kind of wild...

Why is it called a button clutch? Is it because of the radical engagement, or because it has 'buttons' on it?

Is this typically a race only type of clutch(the button)?

That $75 slave is more than likely an A/C Delco slave.

It's still a GM slave just packaged in a different box. At least that's what i looked like to me when I compared the two, couldn't tell a difference.

I'm currently using it and put 10k miles on it with a lot of track pass. No problems so far.

My Ram HD was horrible. It was either on or off on the street. I could not drive it anywhere. I went from 6250 miles last yr to 850 this yr b/c it was such a pain to drive. After I put on the Nitto 315 DR's it lasted 700 miles and now it is wrecked.

I belive its called a button clutch because it resembles the look of a button.

It was intended as a race only clutch, but it can be ran on the street depending on the friction material used.

Yeah mine is also an On/off DD. I kind of got use to it to the pedal pressure (until I bought this 85 prelude for 500 bucks, felt like I wasnt even doing anything!). I didnt notice too much chatter although I'm not sure 100% on if I experienced chatter or not, I'm not entirely sure what chatter feels like. But with my cam at low rpms in 1st and 2nd gear it would buck real bad unless you gave it more throttle or pushed the clutch in. I feel like getting some 4.10s will solve this issue.

Giving it more gas while letting out on the clutch is called "slipping the clutch" more. I have to slip my clutch quite a bit if I want to take off from a start real slow for some reason. I doubt 4.10s will have any effect. I think I read in a magazine that a heavier flywheel would lessen the shudder. So it would be a trade off.

You can hear chatter.

Button clutch is just a term as well. Doesn't have to be that particular clutch shown above. I've heard others use the term as well. Means it's more on/off than a stocker.

There's only one manufacturer of our slaves in the world. So get it at the cheapest place. Advance Auto's web site did it for me.

I drove 2 Ram HD equipped cars in the past month and I could take off smoothly. I'm getting ready to put one in my car after my SPEC 2+ lasted a whole 3k miles if that.

Default clutch

Ive got about 500 miles on my RAM HD and it is really on/off. I have been breaking it in though and it gets easier to drive on the street each day. It does shake the car a LOT if you try and slip it. I also put a spec billet steel flywheel with it too and updated hydraulics.

well with my cam and gears I have to slip it when going through parking lots in first, pretty much cant go below 15 miles an hour without coasting or slipping the clutch. When stuck in traffic I just give it some gas, and a bunch of clutch then clutch in and coast. I didnt notice it having a particularly hard time dealing with slip...
