Default Want To Quiet The Lifter Tick

before you all say GC read my post here...

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/574324-header-leak-pics-vid-inside.html

i tried that GC, YES MADE IN GERMANY! Mad my car A LOT LOUDER!!!

so i am using M1 5W30 Fully Syn... now i am so weary to try M1 0W40.. is that thicker? i was told that GC 0W30 was thicker than M1 5W30. But that was BS.. what about M1 10W30.. i was told that is thinner than M1 5W30..

so what is the deal.. How to quiet the lifter tick????

No Lucas Stabilizer either.. that is bad

The "W" in an oil type stands for Winter- meaning its viscosity at 0* Celcius.. Another way of looking at multi-vis oils is to think of a 20W-50 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 50 weight would when hot.
I run Amsoil Series 2000 0W30 in my TBSS and its a nice quiet ride, even with double springs..

if it is the oil, try the rp 10w 30 its night and day compared to m1.

gc was worse then m1?? im thinking if this is the case, or there the same then its not oil related. , maybe loose spark wire- had a ticking on my 84 really loud ticking , turned out one of my plug wires were totally off and jumping about a foot with the spark.. (high oput coil) could also be an exhaust leak etc.

Not an exhaut leak. No carbon by the headers. not a loose plug/wire or coil.. car idles fine, no stuttering hesitating or bucking. so it was the oils. i changed it last night, put in the M1 5W30 and started it up, car was alomst quiet again..

you tell me....

Are you certain that this is a lifter tick, and
not (say) a rocker that lost its needles, or
a bent pushrod, or some other top end noise
maker?

You mention the Series 2000 TSO 0w-30. Another good choice with AMSOIL is the AFL 5w-40 (European) which has quieted many a LS1 and it costs less to boot.

I'll tell you what I am running now - car never ran better or quieter. When my car is warm, valvetrain noise is virtually non-existant.

4 quarts m1 10w-30
2 quarts m1 15w-50

Changed my LS1 to GC and even changed my 02 2500HD with 6.0 to the GC and both of them got much more quiet, especially the 6.0 which made more noise to begin with and I was also using M1 10W30 in it. My 99 Camaro came with an oil package from SLP and they were using Castrol Syntec in it already so I just switched to the GC in it.

If your so bent on not switching from "gm recommended" 5w-30 Mobil 1, why are you considering throwing different weights of oil in together?

regular valvoline

the problem we had on our 98 V6 camaro is that they used something like penzoil in it, and apparently the penzoil and quakerstate are diffrent than valvoline, the lifters had a bunch of gunk in them, and when we used valvoline it just wiped all that stuff out of the lifters, actualy enough to clog up the oil pickup tube, had to pull the oil pan.

Mobil 1 is not recomended by GM for LS1s, honestly its a waste of money. i dont want to hear anyone saying how much better mobil one is.. becuase i had appart a motor with 130,000 miles on it and all that was ran in it was regular oil, it had no wear on anything. the guy from the machine shop thought the motor had like 20k on it..

i say go mobil 1 5W-40. the problem with mobil 1 5W-30 is it protects poorly once it's warmed up. the 30 weight rating may as well be a high 20 weight. it's too thin and that's why mobil 1 30W's generally show high wear numbers on the LS1.

with the 5W-40, you'll get the same cold start protection and your engine should sound the same upon startup. it'll just protect better once it runs operating temperature. the mobil 1 5W-40 runs close to the same thickness as GC 0W-30 at operating temperatures. though the oil base isn't as exotic, it's surely better than mobil 1 5W-30.

mobil 1 10W-30 will keep your engine noise the same once the oil heats up as 5W-30 and 10W-30 would be the same thickness and protect the same once operating temperatures are achieved, so skip right over mobil 1 10W-30.
