Default t56 vent tube

The cap for my vent tube cracked and I just posted to the WTB section looking for a new one but after searching around, I'm wondering what exactly the function of this is and if I can replace it with something easier to find (I can't find anyone selling the cap or even the whole vent tube assembly).

Would someone mind explaining to me what this tube does (beside vent, obviously) and more particularly, how important is the cap? Is the cap's only purpose to keep out debris or is there more to it then that? Mine broken incredibly easily so I can't imagine I'm the first one to have to deal with this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Give me a call in the am. I should have a few lying around.

Thanks,
