Default How did this converter carnage happen? $PICS$

I was idling out of a parking lot at maybe 5 mph and I heard a PING... and then that was it. Got it to the shop took the trans apart and the pump rotor was shattered also. The day before I drove it 40 miles to work and felt a slight vibration through the shifter.

Anyone seen this before? Just wondering if I should maybe go billet rotor next time incase it was the pump.

Inspect the flexplate for cracks? Hope none, since
I'm counting on the '98 in mine to not do it like the
later version does.

TCI flexplate................

I had it in the car for about 2K miles... And about 5 1/4 track passes this spring. Think I got it last September. Changed out trans this March so it was inspected then.

Maybe ran this converter on spray about 10 times. Mine has a upgraded billet cover so it should be built for it. It stalled fine, just a mishap with the converter or the Trans pump.

It maybe a good idea to send that converter back to TCI quick to have it refreshed. See if your trans went that means it sent crap through the converter from your trans. So when you put it on the new trans you may send some of that junk back through your new trans and it may cause failure should also mention the cooler should be flushed also.

I guess I have just come to accept these bumps in the road with these lockup converters/ 4L60 combo. Now I have a backup trans and converter and my cousin works at a trans shop so it is easy for me to say that. I think he is going to give up on me soon and just ram a 400 in there and say break that!!!

Same thing just happened to my TCI converter it is also the SSF with the billet front cover. It had less than 4000 miles on it.. NO Racing, NO track time.. easy street driving only.. I was crusing down the highway whe I heard a loud popping and then nothing.. Needless to say I am extremely upset right now, as my tranny is taost and this is costing me big time to get it re-built..

DO you know anyone with a lathe ??? a good machinist. You should measure from the centering pilot on the front of the converter as your center. Either that or clamp the hub or clamp the crank pilot. Either way total runout should not exceed 0.002-3

Peace out.

I wouldn't use a stock flexplate at all.. hughes makes a nice SFi approved one... it's not that much $ and IMO is well worth it.

UPdate: TCI confimed there is a problem with the hubs they use for the SSF with the billet cover. Heat treat was bad making them brittle. Anyone who has one I would suggest you call and talk with TCI to make sure yours it not affected...
