Default K&N filter w/o oil reuseable?

So I've been getting horrible mileage and decided to change my air filter (totally unaware that the previous owner had installed a K&N filter) It was filthy and half of it was like almost plugged. It appears that when it was last put on it wasnt oiled. Is it still possible to clean this and make it superior to the cheap 10 dollar fram filter?

And is there any real gain to running a K&N vs a Fram? What power gain is there if any.

You can clean the K&N with a kit, or just run the paper.

2. We perform internal dyno (power curve) testing on all our product designs. Our replacement filters are designed to provide up to 4 horsepower. Your results will vary depending on your vehicle, driving habits, load on the engine (towing for example), existing air system restriction, and other factors.

24. How do K&N filters differ from other brands of filters?

Most air filters sold today use synthetic fiber, foam, or paper as opposed to our 4-ply cotton gauze material. These materials do not have the very small fibers that natural cotton does. See our Air Filter Facts Page for more information. Only our reusable filters provide the high airflow capability while also providing a high filtering efficiency.
I got this from the K&N web site... as long as the filter eliment isnt torn or has holes in it you should be able to thoroughly clean it and oil it, it has a 1,000,000 mile warranty. unless its damaged it should be better than a paper filter..

Spray it down with the K&N cleaner. Let it set for about 20 mins and turn the water hose loose on it. It will come clean just don't over oil it. MAF's are a bitch to clean correctly.
