Question AFR 205's or 225's?

I currently have a 346 with AFR 205's, G5X3 and bolt-ons. It's a very nice set up. But as you know, more is never enough. So I've decided to buy a 402 shortblock. To keep costs down I was concidering using the same heads and cam. I'm OK with sacrificing some peak power as long as the low to mid range torque will be alot better. So what do you guys think? Will 205's make more torque than 225's, or just choke the whole thing down. Also, will the G5X3 feel docile with the extra cubes? Will I need more cam keep similar driving characteristics? Thanks for you input.

Check this out. He's running a setup similar to what you are talking about.

I think the AFR 205 heads will work fine on the 402. You won't get as much up top or and your peak numbers will be a little lower but the lower and mid range rpm's should be better.

But I would consider having a custom cam built. I'm not a big fan of off the shelf cams going into bigger cube motors. I'm having New Era Performance get me a custom built cam for my upcoming 402 setup. You fill out a sheet giving them all the info on the car (cubes, current mods, power adders, vehicles intended use, heads ect and then the guru of camshafts custom makes the perfect cam for your vehicles application.

If you are interested you can call Mike @ New Era Performance 585-865-1832 or email him at sales@neweraperformanceparts.com

Good luck with your new setup.

if it were me....
put your cam and heads on the 402.
yes, the 225's will make more HP. but, the 205's you already own.
if nothing else, some of us would be interested in your comparison between the
346 and the 402 with the same heads/cam/intake/headers.

from my ford days, that much of a stroke increase will tame that g5x3 quite a bit.
should really pump up the mid range and still help on top. the stroke increase will shift peak power down about 500ish rpm..

I was facing the same choice last week, when I had my 383 block installed.
Do I want 205's or 225's, that was the question!

I finally decided to go with the 205's for the reason above.
I liked the idea of having lower & mid range power, over peak power.

Thanks for al the input guys. I've deciced to keep the 205's and add a Fast 90/90 intake t/b to the 402. With 460 rwhp/420 rwtq now, I don't see any reason it won't make 500+ rwhp and have killer torque.
