The low oil level light (NOT the Change Oil light)- is it a just a nice feature, or is it there because something especially catastrophic happens to an LS1 that's short on oil? Is the LS1 unusually susceptible to damage done from insufficient oil levels?

thanks, guys, I know that any engine needs a proper oil level otherwise mucho damage will result, but I was just wondering if the reason GM spent money implementing that was just because it's nice to have (do other cars from other mfrs have that, anyone know? I don't drive a whole lot of different cars) or whether it's because the ls1 may be particularly susceptible to damage from low oil levels because of some design reason. The reason it occurred to me is because designers of hardware and software tend to put in extra safeguards when the results of failure/misuse/accident are going to be more dramatic- i.e., my digital camera doesn't warn me when I delete a half-dozen images, but whenever I select them all for deletion, I get an additional confirmation box popping up, asking me if I really want to do this.)
I had my low oil light come one once, at only 1qt down, BTW- seems like for most people it's 2).
It is a nice feature to have, and it gives a little more peace of mind. And that may be the only reason it's there. But the dark, paranoid part of my brain that wants to keep my car safe wondered if there was more to it than that.

Nothing major can happen more than any other car. They just want you to take care of your care and keep it runnings it's best. Plus if you do it it's less money for them to have to fix anything under warranty.

It came on for me at exactly 2 quarts low. The LS1 shouldnt be any more susceptible to damage from being low on oil. I'm almost positive its one of those nice to have features. Just like on the vette with the tire pressure sensors, is the vette any more susceptible than an F-body to damage from low tire pressure?
