Default im confused

when are you suppose to shim the valves. I've never heard from comp or anybody about shimming the valves. any help would be nice. my car makes A LOT of ticking sounds. i always blew it off as normal valve train noise. i have a upgraded the valvetrain some. stock rockers, hardened pushrods, comp lifters. do all these cars make valvetrain noise. i can hear it off of cars beside me at stop lights. thanks

Are you referring to shimming the springs? The spring manufacturer should tell you if they need to be shimmed, but they didn't in my case. What kind of springs do you have?

When you say that you hear valvetrain noise, is it that sewing machine sound? If so, that's normal with an aftermarket cam. If you hear a ticking or knocking, that may be a problem. When in doubt, post a video.

im using the comp double springs. the ones that come on the patriot heads. it is like a sewing machine but ticking. Its sound loud. maybe if i changed to a thicker oil that would take care of it?

Thicker oil may quiet it down. I'm not sure if those springs need to be shimmed, but I doubt it. Someone else might be able to weigh in on that. However, if you're hearing a light ticking sound coming from both heads, I'd imagine that's probably normal. Post a vid if you can, and we'll try to help you diagnose it.
