Default For those of you hooked on GC..

I know it's hard to find that stuff, so here are two alternatives:

Either of these will suit you just fine. I'm so sick of hearing people whine about not being able to find GC.

Yes, it says it is the "European Formula", but make sure it is made in Germany. Not all "European Formula" Castrol is from Germany. (That's the G behind the GC. )

A bunch of us on BOBISTHEOILGUY.com contributed a bunch of money in order to get the German Castrol completely analyzed in order to determine the nature of it's base oil and we were very happy to find out it uses an extremely exotic base oil which is fully synthetic, extremely shear stable and uses no polymer viscosity index improvers.
The German made & American made Castrol Syntec oils are not the same.

I still don't get it. There are plenty of cars running fine with Mobil1. Why all of the work to find ths German made stuff? Are you really going to notice a difference?

Just run dino oil then, you won't notice the difference.

On the other hand, read some of the oil analysis tests on different oils and see the difference.

There are other oils that are considered better than american castrol. Better is strictly from an oil analysis point of view. You wont actually notice much difference. Maybe a diff in pressure and or startup noise, but little else.

I guess the oil analysis may mean something if you are planing on running 1 million miles. For the rest of us staying under 300,000 a good synthetic is more than good enough.

So checking oil analysis is if you only drive a million miles? So a million miles is where a really good oil starts to shine? Did I recomend one oil over another? I think maybe all I said was to do some research and see what the good oils are and so you know if your even buying a so called synthetic oil, then maybe you can make your own decision. Yeah, you could use any good synthetic, but the original post here was about GC and how sick he was about people not being able to find it. The oil analysis can break down the differences between the real GC and the eurpean version (what the poster put up), their not the same.

Welcome to the internet, where every product is the worst and best thing on earth.

It's best to just do your own research, when possible, such as in this case. Drain the oil you have now, send it off to get analyzed, and pop some GC in your engine. Run it for 3k miles, send it off to get analyzed and compare to the old analysis. It's a pretty good bet that it will have better results than the typical synthetics people run (excluding Amsoil which is top notch as well). If it doesn't for whatever reason, you've only lost 10 minutes of your life to read the analysis and whatever it cost to get the oil analyzed. Then you can know for sure. However, if you're like me where you really don't want to take time aside to do this sort of thing, you can trust the multiple people on here who have shown actual test results of the GC that proves it stays cleaner longer than most other oils, and the many people who have nothing but good things to say about it regardless of its analysis (better pressure, less startup noise, etc).

Do you guys think that JUST MAYBE the difference between the oils is too little to realistically worry about? Like yes it exists - just like a hangnail exists and is very real to the person with it - but you don't really need a trauma surgeon working on it.

I don't think anyone's saying American Castrol is going to seize your engine. It's just that the German stuff is engineered better to last longer and run cleaner. I don't see why someone wouldn't use something that lasts longer and is more effective in the long run. If it's that hard to find, obviously M1 isn't a crap *** oil or else so many cars wouldn't use it from the factory. However, there are oils better than it. German Castrol is one. If you can find it, use it. If not, no biggie. The only thing I have a problem with is people saying it's not all it's cracked up to be when it's been proven over and over again that it is. Sure it may not make your engine last a million miles but it may make it last 100k instead of 95k. To me, that's worth it when I drive a car that puts more hp to the ground than 4 hondas. To some people it's not. Opinions like that can be argued, the fact that it's a superior oil cannot.

IIRC, that second oil i posted meets the specs for the VW TDI diesel engine which has some of the HIGHEST standards around. if it's good enough for those motors, then it sure as hell is good enough for your LSx.

Yeah, still it's not the same as GC. And there's really no point in being that specific. If you can get GC, use it. If not, I doubt it'll matter. I wonder how the Pennzoil Platinum is.
