Default T5 5th and Reverse are inop

A coworker here has an 89 V6 firebird. His reverse and 5th gear aren't working. When you try to put it in reverse, it won't go all the way into gear, and just freewheels. If you're driving and put it into 5th, it will go all the way into gear, but freewheels also.

Ideas, thirdgenners?

The rear tip of the input shaft might be broken off. Seen it happen, don't know how it would on a six cylinder though.

Does this happen only when going into 5th gear?

If so, maybe the locking rings on the syncro are worn out.

See edit above. It's the rear of the input shaft that might be broken off.

Yes- that could also be the case- - we need more info on the symptoms of the problem..
