right now i have pacesetter LT, TSP cats y-pipe, is it worthy to swap to catalics converter ODB to pass smog ? or i just keep what i have and find "friend" to pass smog?

also where can i find mufler shop who know to do true dual around upland area? i was thinking to swap to cats 1 chamber

It might pass the sniffer, but its going to fail the visual. the "buddy" hook up is a hard thing to come by in CA. good luck finding someone to put their job on the line (and fines) for $100 and a perfect stranger.

IIRC the fine for the shop that gets caught (first time) is like 50k!!!!!!! Not too mention they lose the ability to do certifications for a period of time which costs them a ton in business. :( There are places out there that still are friendly, but they are rapidly going away as technology catches up to the smog game. :(

Wouldn't it be nice if you could smog your car out-of-state?

Since LT's are an automatic fail in Cali, there is no point in buying "compliant" cats unless they are to replace your factory cats that are affixed to your factory exhaust manifolds. :(

It was much easier to "get by" smog checks back in the day........before they attached computers to everything.

What I don't understand is what is keeping somebody smart from designing something "close" to long tubes with cats and getting them approved with an EO#.

Is there something fundamental about long tubes that prevents cats from operating effectively? Build them into the collectors or something.

I am pretty sure it has more to do with the Federal Govt's requirement that the cats not be moved from the factory/stock location......which, by nature, long tubes do. SO you cannot retain the factory location of the cats AND have long tubes regardless of how brilliant the engineer is.......and getting something past the CARB is hell. Hence why the vast majority of parts you see out there for cars don't have an EO or CARB #. :(

Now, admittedly I am no genius but I suspect that the purpose of having collectors on long tube-headers would be diminished or basically destroyed by making the collectors into catalytic converters. :(

what about OBD1 cars that have 1 cat right behind the stock Y pipe? if you weld a cat onto the ORY in the same location would that pass?

It won't pass the visual. But if buy a set of old rusty edelbrock headers on ebay, you can cut off the carb tag and weld it onto your long tubes and hope for the best.

Not only cant change the location of cats, but Cali dosnt allow you to deviate from stock cats, and you cant replace cats unless they fail. Most muffler shops wont touch your cats, unless they are clogged. I guess if you want to stay legal in intent, but not to the letter, just put new clean factory cats on yourself every 30k or so.

Ive got the same setup as you, But my dads a smog tech :) i have no trouble at all...

you can still fix up the car with enough legal mods to have some fun and not worry every 2 years.
