Crate Engine -> No MAF-> What do I need?
I have an '04 Crate Corvette LS1 I'm getting ready to put in my '56. Fuel/intake stuff ends at throttle body (drive by wire).
What specifically do I need? MAF, Maf Sensors? Of course Air Filter.
Are there different types, and is so, how do I know which I need.
Thanks for any advice.

I'm sorry. I wasn't clear. I want to know what as it relates to the MAF that I need.
Are all MAFs the same, or does it require a specific one. What other parts, as it relates to teh MAF and things in front of the TB do I need?
In answer to your questions, I do have a tranny; I do have a computer; I plan to purchase a harness from Speartech.
I am having trouble getting the right flex plate. The one that came with the engine (Corvette) of course won't work. I purchased one from auto parts for a 2002 Camaro, and doesn't fit the torque converter. The tranny is for an '05 Chevy 5.3 truck, I think. I'm told I probably need a dished flex plate.

You can bolt on a 4" diameter filter onto the throttle body, skip the MAF and run speed density.
You'll need to have your PCM reprogrammed. this thread discusses what's needed http://www.hptuners.com/forum/showth...ty+disable+maf

Decided to go with MAF
Upon finding out that doing 'mail order tuning' is not conducive to a good speed densitiy tune, I plan to go ahead with a MAF.
What do I need to know to be sure I get the right one? For example, I see one on ebay listed as BRAND NEW and GENUINE AC Delco 3 1/2" LS1 Maf Sensor. At this point in time, I don't know if 3 1/2 " is what I have a need for or not, or if there is eve a different sized one. It is listed at a reasonable price.
Also, they say "use it with our MAF translator". Is that somethign else I need?
So all in all given that my engine has a TB, and thats it, I need:
Is that right?
I guess the last question would be: Is there any reason to spend extra $ for an aftermarket MAF?
[EDIT]
Ok. I've done some browsing around. It looks to me like the translator is a tuning device, and not a component that goes on the car.
Other questions still apply.

you just need a maf and an air filter (you can fab up the ducting or have it done for you). do a search on the forums for the appropriate part number for your situation. you really can use any maf you want and have the computer reprogrammed to match the maf's output (this CAN be done via mail order easily). i plan to use a 85mm truck maf and have my computer tuned to match (only cause i will have the computer tuned anyway and the 85mm maf was $20 to my door).
if you _really_ have trouble, then you can hit ebay or your local parts store and tell them the year/model ls1 and they will give you the appropriate maf. used maf's should run < $50 and new ones < $150.
the engine harness should be all you need to connect it.

Cool. I wasn't sure if there was a size difference, or what.
I've been doing a little reading since my post, and I see claims of 10-15 HP gains, and improved gas mileage, for the expensive afermarket ones.
Anyone know if there is any validity to those claims?

The LS6/LQ4 MAF (85 mm) is a good bit larger then the stock LS1 MAF, easy to have tuned for by mail order, and 50 bucks to your door (new) on Ebay most the time.

Try to avoid runnig the maf/filter combos that come straight off the throttle body as they end up sucking the hot air from behind the radiator causing you to lose at least 10-15 horsepower once the water temperature is up to operating range.

Please, for all those against "mail order tunes," tell me how a stock tune on a stock engine is a bad thing? Yes, yes, I know you can squeeze a few extra horses through the tuning, but is it really such a big deal?
If it were a modified engine (heads/cam/etc), then of course I'd be 100% against a mail order tune. Also, SD is pretty nice, but the MAF, when properly setup, gives a nice layer of redundancy for the closed loop system that I wouldn't remove unless I was drawing enough CFM to saturate it (thus making it useless).
Opinions?

Well, I'm not worried about getting every extra tiny bit of horsepower out of the engine. I won't be racing it. I pulled my 350 with a blower to go to this engine, and have moved past the foot in the floor.
I have no information on who would be a good local tuner, and if they aren't good, I expect it can be just as possible that it's worse than just a mail order tune. And extra cost and hassle.
Again, my goals are reliability, and decent mileage.
