Default Cam swap with heads on?? Special tool for holding lifters??

I had a bad lifter so replaced the cam. I have 1 head off and the other side while spinning the cam could not get the lifters to stay up in the tray. What I did was tilted the car past 45 degrees and stuck a magnet in one...and luckily it worked. Is there a tool or some method to safely keep the lifters held up?
Someone told me they use a 5/16 rod?? or a JPR tool ?? what is that?

anyone got a write up or some pics?
thanks.

I used the pen magnet trick on my previous car when I went cam only. Worked great, and I even took them all back to Auto Zone afterwards They seriously didn't care.

Wooden dowel from Lowe's worked like a charm and it was only a couple of bucks.

Yea, I'm pretty sure they are. You might have to sand the one for the passenger side down a little, but these will work as well as the metal ones.

you can also use hard brake lines. Just as cheap as the wooden dowels and you don't have to stick a peice of wood inside your engine!

I was thinking about that. Would it be st to use the 5/16 brake line or smaller? I noticed alot of people when they use a metal rod they grind the end to a point. Is that needed?

great picture. Are those the 5/16? I heard some people using 1/4 but I would think the lifter may slide past

I have used 5/16" wooden dowels in the past. Although after thinking about it more and seeing post on here, I don't want to take the chance of the wooden dowels breaking while in there. So today I went to Lowe's and bought some 5/16" metal rods that I will have cut to the proper length. And they cost me $7.60 for the two. I like the piece of mind though knowing that they won't break in there.

Theres no way in hell id use a wooden dowel...What are you going to do when you break it off...I use metal ones with the passenger side sanded down a hair to creat an edge.

Just wondering, why do some people grind a flat area on the rods? Does that have to be done to work?
