Military Hotrod Club - Thinking about joining
SMOKY

I have been thinking about enlisting to serve for a couple of months now, I already took the asvab when I was talking to the navy recruiter and scored an 85 which they said qualified me for nuke. I never signed the papers since I'm not sure that would suite me well enough. I was starting to look more into the para rescue from Air Force That sounds a little more fun than being homer j. simson in the navy. My question is has anyone done either of thos jobs? What other jobs are offered in other branches for a mechanically inclined person? I have also graduated 2 years ago from wyotech so I have had jobs that pay more than the armed forces could pay me, I just thinking its time to serve the country I live in for a little while.

You can be a Humvee mechanic in the Army.

airforce is the way to go, in the army there no doubt youll go to the desert for a year or more at a time, marines i think the same, in both of those army and marine, your socndary job is infantry, meaning that they can pull you from your career field if they really need you, so dont do army or marine. if you like being on a boat go navy, cause youll be on one for half of your enlistment, if not all. airforce is cake, easiest of all the branches, but hardest to get in cause you to score so high on the asvab, im a crew chief on the B-1b theres also fighters and cargos you can go in to, you can go in for aerospace purpulsion where you work on jet engines, or hydro,or the air craft electronics. or if you have a degree, you can go officer, and get paid more, but youll be in more of a management position, than turning wrenches, benefits are great, air force your allowed to live off base if your senior airman with 3yrs of service, or if the dorms are over populated (you get your on room (after basic and tech school), but you share a bath room with one person. IMO air force is the way to go

Air Force is cutting 40,000 jobs in the next three years. You might wanna get a higher ASVAB score to get accepted. Not as easy as it was when I enlisted in '98 (out in 04, they layed my ass off).

Yup, I was in the USAF from 99-05 and I tried to go back in last month and they told me too bad so sad. They weren't taking any prior service due to downsizing. I agree though, if you can, go AF. I just re-upped with the Army as an intel analyst, but then again, i'm retarded. ;)

Well, para rescue is that air force special forces type thing isn't it? I don't think that would be very mechanically oriented. I would head more toward a nuke or any kind of aviation mechanics. As a nuke, you most likely will be on a ship for the rest of your contract. If you get stationed on a surface vessel, like a carrier, be prepared to see the world man. If you get on a sub, well, you're screwed. How many months at sea, undersea, in a little cigar with 100 other men? Umm.....no. You should probably go with aviation mechanics or as just a regular mechanic in any service.

Pararescue is a good field to get into. However get ready for a physical fitness overload though. You will be challenged both physically and mentally in th PJ's. Take some time and think about what you want to do.

PJ is one of two career fields in the USAF that are considered special forces.
You do NOT have to score high to get into the USAF - they will take you if you meet the min. requirements for a critical field (SFs and some C&C AFSCs). While the USAF is downsizing, there is still a shortage (ironic) of people in certain career fields, particularly those that sustain our presence in the Middle East.
If you're mechanically-inclined, I would venture to say that ALL services have a job for you. My father was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy, the Army has tons of land mobile vehicles, and the USAF crews countless fighters. Not to forget that the Navy has carrier jets, the Army has TANKS!, and the USAF has HMMWVs/5-tons as well. Except I don't think any USAF unit has the armored/reinforced with crew-served weapon HMMWVs in theater. Those Army guys are bad ass!

I scored a 99 on the ASVAB, still went Marine. I work I-Level Avionics, not that tough of a job really (not as a SGT anyways), but we do get deployed like it's going out of style. If you join the military you're gonna get the Green (or blue) Weenie once in a while regardless of which branch, just spin the wheel dude.

we had a couple airforce guys attached to my battalion and some airforce eod the eod guys had an 1114 humvee which came with a substantial amount of armor from the factory. the army also gave them a RG34 armored truck, which is probably the 4th most armored vehicle in theater behind the abrams, bradley, and buffalo.

umm ya keep telling yourself that. soldiers and marines secondary jobs are not infantry. people that arent infantry can do little more than operate their weapons.

Umm ya keep telling YOURSELF that. Marines are rifleman first, I am not in the infantry but I guarantee you that myself and my fellow Marines know a little more about warfighting than how to operate our weapons. Semper Fi.

Takes much balls to join up right now. Much props for that. I think you should seriously think about making that kind of commitment. Realize that you sign an 8 year contract and by the way things are going in the desert you might have to do the whole 8 on active if things don't let up. Very proud of all you guys on active duty right now. It really pisses me off how little average people know about the sacrifices you guys make. And it makes me sad how little attention our fallen troops are receiving in the news.

KdubFl that is a great saying that I might have to steal. I am starting to lean more towards sf as in swcc, seabees, or pj since I have always been interested in the law enforcement/ fireman fields. Thanks for all the help so far.

I am starting to lean more towards sf as in swcc, seabees, or pj since I have always been interested in the law enforcement....
Let me tip you on something about this common misconception...
Most large PD's (at least here in the Vegas area) hate prior military police. A lot of them get out and go to test for a department, thinking they know it all. I used to have a buddy who was an instructor in the academy here in Vegas for Metro and he said that most of those guys come in to the Academy, and they have to "deprogram" them and try to beat the courses through their skull, more often then not getting the "well this is how we used to do it" line while they do it.
Now don't get me wrong, i'm not bagging on military cops, or even saying you shouldn't go in as one (though I highly advise against it... I feel safe in saying the majority of them dislike their jobs). But I know that when I tested for Metro last year, all prior military got the same extra point... weather they were military police, a cook, a PJ, mechanic, or what have you. So my suggestion to you would be... go in to whatever branch you want, and do something that you feel like you'll enjoy doing. Don't go be a military cop (or something similar) just because you want to go in to law enforcement when/if you get out, because it won't really do you any good.

A buddy of mine was in the NUKES in the NAVY and was put on a sub, he kinda liked it. Lots of jobs available if you get out.
For PJ's... be prepared to work out more then you have ever in your life. Like miles and miles of hard fast swiming and runing, hundreds of push-ups... all in the same day. You will also not be able to go untill like a year from now (classes full). Check out specialtactics.com on that and be prepared to deploy A LOT.
Pick a job and branch you will like.
Everyone I have ever known in the millitary has said the Air force treats you the best and it offers the best life.
But I have also met ARMY grunts and Marines that would have it no other way.
If you like turning wrenches go Crew Chief in the Air Force or plane captian of whatever in the NAVY and work on jets.
You can get the Airfoce to put you threw A&P school while you are in and when you get out will be able to work on civilian jets/ jet engines.. ect
If you like Nuclear technology and stuff like that then go NUKE in the NAVY but I hear most of those guys spend some time on subs in case you don't like that idea.

well if i could do it again i would but i will say the corps SUCKS. ok not that bad but we are in a adult day care. i have been to the desert twice and looking at 2 more in one enlistment. if you like being micro managed then the military is the way to go. one a good side you can get AWESOME on the job experience and can get better (government) jobs that pay 10 times what you would get while you are in active duty. if you do go, be the best. look at a marine in blues and then look at the guys in the air force uniform. im sorry but our uniform can get ANY one laid (and thats saying alot), but not only our uniforms look the best we are the tightest knit branch. when i get out i will still be a MARINE, you wont be called souldier or seaman or airman. well thats $.02 but its you decision so make a good one and remember ITS ALL WHAT YOU MAKE IT.
if you like being on a boat go navy, cause youll be on one for half of your enlistment, if not all.
Not true. I am Stationed @ China Lake, CA now, and I am Transferring to NAS Atlanta in January. Both non- deployable shore duty. :)

I will agree with you that our dress uniforms look the best, but it's just a recruiter tactic :eyes:
You will hardly ever wear it. Ive worn my blues 3 times in the last 5 years. Its not like your going to wear them out to the club.
You also have to purchase the blues with your own money & it isn't cheap.

the other uniforms are better looking also, not just blues. Figure you will get to wear your blues at least once a year in Nov.
Its not like your going to wear them out to the club.
you have never been to a club/bar in blues?
your missing out. I have been to many clubs and bars in my blues and its the best. you dont pay for a damn thing. you have to turn away drinks. you are allways going onstange, you never wait in a line to get in.
and i dont even think i need to mention the women.

Nope never have been. Only wore my blues if the occasion called for formal dress. Did you go after an event or you just decide to wear them sometimes to the bar/club?
