Default Hard start - runs fine

Very hard to start....
Starter goes 5 or 6 seconds.. engine surges a little, then turns over..
Once its running, there isnt a problem in the world.
I suspect fuel issue..
So I turn the key ON... let the pump move fuel.. turn key off then back on.. let it move more fuel... hit the gas a little and she turns over better sometimes..
When car is hot, and it was recently turned off.... starts right up..
Things only got 22k miles on it.. But its a 02 ws6..
Thinkin I should just change the fuel filters plugs and wires.. Clean the injectors cuz it is 5 years already almost..

Any other suggestions?
No lights or anything.. Car runs strong 12's still with this issue.

Stock internals.. Only have Slp loudmouth, cold air intake and lid from slp..

Well, I changed the fuel filter since thats a lot eaiser, and obviously its not that.
Im gonna swap out the pump..
Gotta turn the key on, then off, then on again, hit the gas once, and it starts..
Otherwise, it will turn for a while before it slowly putters to a start..
Once on, runs like a champ..
Agreed to be pump??

Fuel pump relay maybe? 22K seems pretty early for either the pump or the relay to be going out though. The relay is a lot cheaper and easier to replace though, so I'd probably start with that just to rule it out.

I hear the pump prime w/no problems.. So I ruled out the relay..
Pump motor spins, but im sure the internals on the pump are fried out..
I have almost no pressure from the valve by the engine after shutdown..
Just a few sputters..
I ordered a pump.. Should be here in a few days.

Have you ever run the tank dry? Just seems odd that a fuel pump would die at 22K miles unless the filter got clogged or the tank was run empty. Usually GM fuel pumps last me ~100K. I always change my fuel filters every 10-15K miles......

agreed, usually a pump wont go out in that small amount of miles...however if you have already ordered the pump, the easiest way is to change it from the top....without dropping the tank.....if you have any ?s about that lemme know....also check your injectors...and the plugs...

Changed it.. dropped the tank..
Didint solve the problem.
And I checked, no kinked lines in the back by the tank..
The valve on the fuel rail, how much pressure should there be when the car is off?
I did open it up, and it kinda just dripped out a little.. no real pressure at all.

So car will start still if I prime 2 times.... Runs fine, no performance loss...
Changed the fuel filter.. I hear the pump prime both times, so its not a relay...
WTF!!!
If I dont prime 2 times, I can crank it... 5 sec it starts to sputter to a start..
Very gay..

Hitting the "gas" actually has nothing to do with the gas. If you're having to do that to get it started, the idle air control valve isn't opening the throttle butterfly, or isn't opening it enough, at startup. It may be seized to a point where it can move enough to maintain an idle, but not to start the car without you hitting the gas to open the butterfly up a bit.

Not a guarantee, but it's a cheap part and worth a try anyway.

Leaky injectors? I had a problem on a different car but it was injectors. They even held pressure well. In my case it would start great within 5 minutes of being shut down. After that it got hard to start as fuel dripped into the engine. After several hours it evaporated away and would start better.

Mine is the opposite.. cant start anytime..
Even after a hot shut down.
If i rev it, it comes down to 500, then 1000, back to 500.. does this several times before it levels out.
No smoke, but it got worse since I changed the pump..

i suck

I take it you have measured fuel pressure while this all happens and can eliminate it as a variable?

Also, I did not understand if you had looked at the IAC or not. Your idle moving up and down might be a symptom. How does it start if you crack the throttle just a little, mimicking the IAC?

intresting, mine does the same thing! on a dead cold start, i have to tap the gas once for it to turn over right away(procedure: key turn to on, tap gas, ignition and it starts) when i hit the gas doing this, i hear a "click click" from that big black control module where all the throttle cables go. i hope to hear more on this subject

Well I didint think of the iac or any of that. I would have thought the dang computer would catch that and just tell me!!
Tonite car started to bog on 1/2throttle to wot..
So im sure I "f"ed something up in the gas tank..
Im gonna do the pressure tomorrow at the valve..
I lose all pressure immediatley once the car is off.
Its not leaking anywhere.. but all I can think of is the return to the gas tank..
Soo many variables.. How can anyone diagnose this without changing some parts, or just being lucky.

BUT, if I crack the throttle on start, makes no difference..
It just does more sputtering like a flooded engine trying to wake up..
No smoke comming from exhaust, is as clean as can be..

That sounds like a bad check valve or presure regulator.
