How do you get the change oil light to turn off when you start your car up?

Turn key to run, don't start car. Press and hold the trip/oil reset button on the dash for a few seconds until it flashes and goes out.

Yeah, that's normal - it's the GM oil life system based not only on mileage but a bunch of other stuff too (explanation is in the manual). Mine's only come on a couple times with 24K - thinking resetting/retuning the PCM has something to do with it too but not sure.

And, for reference, I believe it's 20 seconds you have to hold it down.

Mine comes on very very rarely. I change the oil every 6K miles and ignore the light. Full syn oil, if it even helps. Maybe I am being paranoid though because I don't drive her too much anymore and it is almost all highway. Too crazy of traffic to drive in town anymore.

Um, not ALL GM vehicles. Some, but not all. I had a Grand Prix GT that was like that, but on an f-body, you turn the key to the run position (not start) and hold the trip/oil life reset button for 12 seconds. The "change oil" light will flash and then reset.
