Chevrolet Camaro 1967-2002 - how much hp can i get out of a stock 1978 5.7L 350

so im debating wether or not i should invest on my stock engine.

i figure i want around 400 horses.. nething else would be a little much for me. im a speed demon. plus i need it to pass smog in cali where i currently live.

if its possible to fully bore it and replace everything w/ performace parts and get 400+ hp at a resonable cost, then thats what id like to do. but if its not possible, then i'll jus save up for a crate engine.

another avenue im open to are engine swaps... what are my options? what would i be looking at price wise?

pretty much, i just want a ballsy car but im not really tryin to get into the 600ish hp range or anything extreme.

i jus want to know what other people have done so i have an idea of what i'm lookin forward to in the somewhat near future.

First off, what kind of budget are you working with here?

i dont really have a budget. but at the same time, i dont have tons of cash to spend. i wanna kno how much i need to save so i can jus get everything done at one engine wise. ie: exhaust, headers, carb, bore, rebuild, etc... im hoping around 3000ish? i can do everything except drop the engine in. i live at an apt. complex and theyre really anal about workin on cars here. what could i do for 3000-4000?
