10-19-2006, 09:25 AM
so far we are told we are to do a VISUAL inspection of all emissions systems..
which is ok cause 01-02's didn't have egr so you should be fine there.. and as long as your tuned and have no codes.. a set of gutted cats should clear you..

I don't think this will work to well.
They have tried before and failed. We will see, but I am guessing the older cars will pass and as long as you have a cat on the car you should be good (since it's illegal not to have them anyway)

So its only for obdII and III cars? The older cars that burn a quart of oil every 500 miles and pollute more than our heads/cam cars don't have to get inspected? :jest:

well we shall see how this plays.. if your car is tuned you should have no cat code..so its all visual.. just weld a hollowed cat around the pipe..
and make sure you have a friendly inspector.. ;)

Well, if it is just a visual inspection then you should have no trouble. Like someone mentioned earlier, just get yourself a pair of hollowed out cats and make sure you have no SES light and you SHOULD be ok. No need to worry just yet.
Now, if they decide to do an actual sniffer test, then I'm going to have to pull the HPTuners out of retirement .

it should be like this.....
You have two choices
Choice A: You pass emmisions
Choice B, you pay an annual fee per car that you acknowledge will not pass, ie-show cars, hot rods, F BODIES, etc....like a tax, that way everyone wins...I'd pay it to get waived granted it wasn't like $1,000 a year or some shit...

all the high populated areas huh...like the high income beach areas where they are replacing hotels/motels with condo's...because the government is killing our tourism.
and honestly, no reason not to have cats on your car, even the high flow ones cause minimal restriction...have some hi flows on, lean that bitch out big time while waiting to get into inspection and see how it goes.

okay so if it dont look stock then they check your shit for what? and you cant have a turbo on a vehicle unless it came with a turbo.... can someone answer?- if you dont have any codes and you pass the sniffer your okay correct?

I like all the comments about older cars though, did anyone read the original post?! It said for ODB II and ODB III cars, so why is the guy with the 2nd gen T/A sweating? I've got a 94 so I'm not worried either, ODB I, oh yeah.
I thought we didn't have emissions and inspections mostly due to the old people. Well thats what I always heard, that they wouldn't do this stuff cause how could all the old people pay for it and keep their vehicles maintaned.
Also 02vortec there was no mention of a sniffer test, just a visual inspection and scanning for emission codes.
lol just tell them the turbo is one of those tornado POS's, for gas efficiency. :)
i just moved down from NJ and barely got by without cats (moved right as my inspection expired lol) so .... looks like ill need to get some cats thrown on if this happens. wonder if a roots style blower would cause me not to pass?

The codes are easy to fix if you know what you're doing, and I'm not talking about just turning them off in the tune, you'll still fail for the test not having been run if you do that on a Ford.

so inspection test- they make sure you have EGR and cats correct? what if i have a turbo- does it have to look stock under the hood- and cant i just get rid of the codes in the ecu so it aint gonna be that back
but does it have to look stock under the hood?

Even high-flows can hurt turbo cars. Not so much with NA/Supercharged cars but any restriction after the turbine can seriously affect spool and to a lesser extent power. Then there's problems with leaded race gas and with melting cats with high EGTs/ rich mixtures. None of these are total game-enders for average NA cars but they really screw over the turbo guys.
hyperzone
10-28-2006, 02:03 PM
I really feel sorry for you turbocharged, supercharged, and spray folk... Are there any N/A guys that have tossed around the possible idea of just having a second exhaust system and tune (stock obvoiusly) to swap in just to get the inspection and then put back to your normal setup? How much could a plain stock exhaust run you, really? I mean, who the hell wants'em? You could probably go to a couple junkyards and find all the pieces for a good price. Then tune it to pass and save that tune just like the exhaust for the next time your inspection is due. Sounds like alot of work but, Not really that much money if your just running heads, cam, and simple bolt ons.
All you guys joking about getting the 'hook-up' I hope are aware of the serious implications there... My question though is, would it technically be illegal to test somebodies work around just to see if it will pass whatever standards are pushed??? Like, will one of you guys working at a shop be able to just run the test unoffically for us? haha...
Plus, this is 2009 we're talking about... thats over 2 years away,... I'm sure there will be plenty of ideas and work-arounds if this really goes into effect.
I wonder if st. johns county will be in there... No major cities here really, and alot of redneck-ville in the west part of the county.

true however they didnt come with cats from the factory so I dont see how the state can make you have them.

Whats the law say about older cars? Are they exempt?
If is anything like the law in Nevada then they do a sniffer and OBDII testing and if your car is over 25 years old you are exempt. I guess they test for different things on the older cars that don't have OBDII
