Default curious anyone running straight alcohol

Im curious I was at the racetrack tonight and alot of turbo cars there, alot of mustangs. anyway one was running a 101mm turbo and no intercooler. I asked him what kind of boost he runs and he said around 27 to 30. Then we started talking about not running the intercooler as he was running the car only on alcohol and it keeps the air charge cool just as a intercooler would. The car looked very clean and had a crossover pipe and about 12inchs of pipe running out of the turbo into the intake. This looked very easy to make. Anyway anyone run a setup simular to this. Im in the process of completing my 97 TA with a 101mm and found it to be very interesting.

OHHH YEA AND THIS CAR WAS FUEL INJECTED HAD A FORWARD FACING TB.

well if you have a alky carbeurator youi run straight methanol and your car runs much cooler and gains some good power. But i have never seen it done on a fuel injected car

There are a couple guys on www.turbobuick.com that run straight meth. The fuel system has to be alcohol friendly and you have to flush it out every so often but they make monster power.

have you ever seen a big blown car run alky? the hat has ice on it after the pass because that fuel burns sooo cold..... its a very good fuel but he stoich for that is about 6:1 AFR

so your 15gallon cell is only about a 7gallon when on meth... you have to burn twice as much...

I have done the straight methanol on a twin turbo small block with no intercooler. It definitely works well but you do have to deal with the added hassle of crankcase moisture and draining and flushing the fuel if it sits for a length of time. I think it is worth it just for the fun factor.

hey guys i run strait meth on my s10 twin gt35's its just a basic tune right now i will post vids and sheets of the final number s in the next couple of weeks. but it is the same setup on the Gn we ran 3 years ago but now its a ls1 not a v6. and the v6 was never dynoed but ran 10.3@118@ 3500#'s was running out of fuel seeing it ran 110-113mph in the 1/8. the new setup has a 650 alky carb and 8 motron 60's for the added fuel down the track. but from what i have learned is it makes stupid power, lots of timing =) and very hard to dial in but i see low 8's with this setup coming soon and just like before people will LOL and say that thing wont run.

well the car in question last night was running strong as hell. The track was very slippery and he was skating down the track and still ran a 5.02 at 145 in the 1/8. if he could hook it would have been some 4.9"S for sure. the car was fuel injected had a 90 elbow and a forward facing tb

Only problem with straight alcohol is having a big enough fuel pump/injectors since you need twice as much. Plus the added work of keeping it clean, not a practical street solution for a daily driver

well Im doing a 101mm build and I dont think it will see any street time at all. Is it really that big of a pain to keep it cleaned out. Ive never ran alcohol so I dont know. what size injectors would be efficient 106lbs wouldnt be enough.

I ran a mechanical hilborn injected BBC on alcohol years ago and even street drove it a little and as long as you ran some gasoline through it when I parked it I never had any problems. I know some bracket guys that run alcohol carbed setups and they have plastic tanks and teflon lines and they never do anything really except race the car.

I'm no EFI alcohol guru though, I would imagine two banks of some big injectors and a belt driven mechanical fuel pump would be what is needed.

With 106 lb injectors you would be lucky to support 650 RWHP on alcohol.

Try 2 sets of 160 pound injectors for a 101mm alky build. Methanol is not worth the hassle AT ALL when you can make 2000 HP from a small block on gasoline without much trouble.

you can keep a buch of weight out of the car though, if you run alcohol. no intercooler, less plumbing, no ice box, 1 less pump and less hose and fittings.. Alcohol isn't a hassle at all for a race car. 3 sets of 160# injectors will support around 3000hp at 70# base fuel pressure..

Im going to look into it and see what all it will involve. Ive been researching on the turbomustang boards and gotten alot of good info. I have the turbo, waste gates, and 106lb injectors and a pretty badass fuel system at hand I have the magnafuel 4303 I bought when I was only doing a n20 setup I guess Im going to sell it and look into something bigger. only thing I dont have is Im still waiting on my etp heads and havent decide what intake setup . the car is gutted and I have the radiator support cut and moved everything forward and relocated everything. I already have a cross over and support brace for the turbo built and mocked up in the car. I have a few more details to work out but I have some really good support with some friends and family with precision turbos. When I go back out to the shop Ill take some pics and post them for you guys. So far it is looking good. I just never thought a turbo setup would cost this much.

Is weight really a big concern? I have a buddy running a ITS 98mm necked down to 88 for his radial/small tire car, and the 100 or so extra pounds from the intercooler and associated crap over the rear tires can only help with traction, and all he has to do is dial in a pound or two more boost to overwhelm the tires, for him it's the traction that holds you back from quicker times, not a lack of power, and the weight over the back can only help. I've worked on Alky cars, and I just didn't like all the little nuances that you had to go through compared to running a gasoline car.
