ok, so I'm VERY new to this area of technical information. Here is what I"m wanting to do.

I have found a place that sells used stock LS1 heads. They told me they would be $175+shipping. So I figured I would pick up a set so I have no down time on my daily driver. I have talked with a VERY knowledgable guy on my local board about my furue plan & set-up I wanna run. Come to find out, his was almost identical.

I'm plannin on a cam swap next year. I wanna go with a 224/224 .581/.581 112. I will also be spraying a 100 shot. I already figure on probably having to go with ARP rod bolts.

Now to the heads part, I figured I could pick up a set & get them port/polished w/new valves cheaper than $1200 for a new set of aftermarket ones. And after talking with the local guy, this is the route I have decided on.

He told me his valves were as follows in his set-up, which was originally basically the same as my plans.

2.02" - intake
1.57" - exhaust

Now I know very little about valves, porting, or any of this technical stuff involved with getting this done correctly without getting screwed. Here are the few questions I need to ask from those who port heads, have ported heads or are just VERY knowledgable in this field.

Remember, this is a daily driver, not a track only car.
1) What brand of valves would you suggest to use in this application??
2) What combustion chamber size should I shoot for with this size cam??
3) If goin with a LS6 intake, should the heads & intake be port matched??
4) Can you request a minmium flow # when getting the heads ported??

Sorry if some of this is considered dumb question by people, but I'm trying to learn. I never plan on going with a larger cam or switching heads. The most extreme thign that could happen is getting forged pistons & better rods way later down the road. Even then my nitrous shot would not exceed a 150 hit.

I'm not looking for super monster power. I'm just trying to build something that I will personally be happy with & can drive to work everyday without any issues.

there are a bunch of threads about heads on this board, with that said...

your best bet is probably to buy a set of CNCed LS6 heads, you can get them for $1000 shipped from some of our sponsers. they would increase your compression to about 10.5:1 and would flow better than ported 241s.
getting CNCed 243 (LS6/LS2) heads will give you better results without spending as much money. i've looked into having a set of 241s hand ported, and it just costs way too much.

a couple companies to look at are Patriot, Livernois, and Texas-Speed

Yea, I have looked at TSP & was originally gonna go with them. But this local guy said his did the following after getting them done.

flowed:
296-300 @ .550 for intake
230-240 @ .550 for exhaust

And put down:
412hp/405tq thru 4l60e, TH-350, 4800 stall, 12-bolt & 28" tires.

He said it wouldn't be impossible for me to hit 450 thru my 6-speed & 10-bolt if they were ported like his. He said they were never flowed again at higher lift as he changed cams & went bigger, but they still are being used with his new set-up.

Should I expect more from a set of TSP heads with the givin cam selection??

the problem w/ hand ported heads is you can never duplicate a set of heads, i would say do the livernois heads, they flow better then that for about a grand, and its a 243 casting, so they arent maxed out

Anyone telling you you will make 450 hp with hand ported 241 heads and that 224 cam on any dyno in Tulsa is just wrong.

Who said they were hand ported & this guy is VERY experienced. He didn't say it would definetly hit those numbers, but said it wouldn't be impossible with a 6-speed & 10-bolt. If he hit 412 with all his power robbing parts, then if it had been behind a 10-bolt it would have put down even more.

After reasearching more & more I might just go with a set of Livernois stage 1 heads for my application. I just initially thought getting a set ported could end up being cheaper in the end. But I have discovered CNC port/valve jobs is where the most cost starts coming in.
