Default Heater blows warm air at best, does your's get hot?

Do your f-body's have good heaters, or does mine suck, or does the engine not get warm enough for the heater to pull hot air from it. It blows warm air, but definitely not hot, and it simply isn't good enough to warm you up when it gets real cold here in Indiana. My temp gauge hardly seems to get above 170 or so unless I'm sitting and idling on a hot day.

Yah, you probably have a 160 stat.

Or modded fan temps. My car will get over 160 if I keep stock fan temps or sit in traffic for a long time.

The stat might be contributing but that is not the whole picture here

My car seems to have a problem with heating also...The temp gauge is fine...Just somethings up with the heater, doesn't blow very much warm like Kape said..

Yep, 160 stat and I think it's tuned to turn the fans on pretty quick too, but I don't know for sure. I flushed the coolant about 30,000 miles ago, so maybe it's time for that.

My Z-28 blows hot, of course I have a 180 degree thermostat instead of the 160 but it heats up really good. A 160 here in east Tennessee is really impractical anyway, I've got the SLP fan switch for bumper to bumper traffic in Gatlinburg. My guess is the same as above, maybe a clogged heater core. Maybe you can buy some radiator treatment to flush the coolant lines and radiator core.

What's the best way to test or flush the heater core?

Pull the hoses off and take a water hose with a gun on the end of it and blow through it. Then hit it with some compressed aire to blow the remainder out. Just do not hit it with the full air pressure of your compressor. If this does not work then its time to pull the dash and get intimate w your friendly f-body

Let's say it is the heater core, how much does a new one cost? Hopefully it's not, because I am SICK AND TIRED of pulling things apart and getting intimate with the once beloved car. I've had to replace almost everything in it, and I baby the crap out of it. BCM, PCM, motor, trans, and rear just to name a few things that have been swapped in a mere 60,000 miles of use.

My problem was that my HVAC control got screwed up, so the temp **** didn't work. I pulled that control out, and immediately got hot air. Might wanna check that out before you spend a lot of time ripping that heater core out. When I got a quote from a dealer, they wanted $600 parts and labor.

It does change from warm to cold, AC works well so i'm guessing it's not the HVAC control, but I'll check it out.

Had the same problem with my 94 ... would not blow warm air when outside temps were below 40*F. I'm sure the heater core was plugged but I sold the car. To the original poster: do try flushing - it's worked for a lot of guys and definitely worth it if you can avoid the hassle or expense of replacing it.
