Default Stripped threads= drilling/tapping?

On my trans. crossmember, one of the bolts(1 out of 4) got stripped but more so the actual threads of the hole. I guess I will need to drill and tap. Have never done this before so please give me some tips. I guess if I rethread the hole, it will be slightly larger in diameter and will therefore need a bigger diameter bolt? Thanks.
