Best to pull the cover off and inspect the diff. Probably broke a spider but if you do not check it now you risk destroying the ring and pinion also

i had something similar but mine would also lock up at high rpms. took the cover off and everything looked fine. after a week it got real bad, was locking up around 2500 rpms and clunking at idle, so i took the cover off again. one of the metal pieces that hold the springs in the posi unit had cracked and was about to shear off. i assume thats what was causing the problem as there were no signs of wear on the ring, pinion, or side gears.

go ahead and upgrade the rear, unless its cost prohibitive at the moment. even if you replace the posi unit and it runs smooth again that is still a puny gear set. i bought a 9" from scott@dls for under 2 grand a couple months ago. considering you will probably drop well over a grand to have your 10 bolt rebuilt, assuming you dont do it yourself, not a huge price difference.

I agree dont rebuild the 10 bolt. Get peace of mind so you dont have to worry, and can use slicks.

When mine went the first time (after a 2-3 powershift) it just made a loud humming noise, but the posi was also clinking and clanking whenever I turned--it was just out of oil. Try putting some more oil and stuff in there first.

could at least pull the cover and look at it. Jack up the rear of the car so that you can turn the wheels by hand (obviously parking brake off and unbolt drive shaft from yoke) and have a buddy or two help you turn the wheels and see whats making the noises. Probably is one of those spider gears for our differential (think its called a torsion differential = not a true posi). Allows the posi aspect to sort of unlock when your not moving in a straight line. (or am I totally wrong about this??? - anyone??)

Never a better time and excuse to get a new beefy rear and forget about the 10 bolt

That's what they do when they go. That would be the nice smell of Gear Oil with the Posi Additive..
Look around, depends on how much you want to spend. I got an Auburn Pro Series with the Shim and Bearing Kit for $503.
