Default Clutch install gone wrong, no oil pressure.

I guess you could say this is the worst clutch install ever. After pulling the transmission for the second time after I found out I had a bad clutch I did my regular routine that I do to a SBC. I take pieces of newspaper and dip them in water to pound in the back of the crankshaft to drive the pilot bushing out. After the pilot pushing falls out i take the paper out and I soon find out that the LS1 has a freeze plug in the middle of the crankshaft??? I was able to get the freeze plug out which was pressed against a rod end crooked with part of the bottom end exposed. I wasn't sure or not if any paper got through so I took my chances and reinstalled the freeze plug, pilot bushing, clutch, tranny etc. I'm testing the car out keeping a close eye on the oil pressure to make sure its not dropping and about 1/2 mile out cruising at normal rpm's the oil pressure starts to drop. Before it hits zero I shut the car off going 40mph and coasted my way into a subdivision. Just to make sure my mind wasnt playing trick on me I tried starting it for a second and sure enough the oil pressure gauge didnt make it out of the red (only for a second or two). I obviously think a piece of newspaper is clogging the oil pickup but I wanted some input as to what other problems you think this may have caused?

I assume since you re-installed the freeze plug, that oil leaking isn't a problem. If you really feel that you only ran a few seconds, then I'd say you might be able to get all the paper off the screen of the pickup. You'll want to check thoroughly to see if more made it into the pump. If it did, you've got a mess on your hands.

Next time try using a blind hole puller from Autozone to get your pilot bushing out. Then there is no need to force stuff behind the bushing to push it out. And it works like a champ too.

I dont know if this is a poke at rodrigues or not, but I too have removed pilot bushings this way. its an easy enough mistake to make assuming it will also work on this engine. thanks for posting your mishap as I have learned from it. good luck figureing out your oil press. problem. sounds like the oil pan is comeing off unfortunatly. Im pretty sure you can just lift the eng. up a bit enough to remove the pan. if that doesnt work, then lower the cradle the rest that is needed while holding the eng. up with the cherry picker.

Thanks for the responses!

I don't know where your going with this csmc711 but it doesn't sound welcome. I probably have more experience than you and I am not the least bit emberessed by my mistake. This is the first hollow crankshaft I have seen.

The oil pan is off (wasnt that bad to remove) just 3 hours of work on 35 degree cement!

Its just blocking the oil pickup

Good to hear it wasn't a huge issue. It's running with full pressure now?

No, you dont, cause you would have KNOWN that was the issue.

You also need to learn english, let me give you an example:

IROCSS "I dont know if this is a poke at rodrigues or not"

My responce "uhm..................no"

how hard is that to figure out? If I wanted to be a dick, I would have said probably as hard as you figuring out what was wrong with your car.

I was defending and supporting you, back off!!

Oh, glad to see that was all it was.

It doesn't matter... 60psi oil pressure at startup, everything is good.

BTW Pat, how's your 95 been running? I thought I heard of you running at M11 this year and getting into the 9's? that right?

Glad your car is fixed, that would have been scary. Just for the rest of us, how much paper towel do you estimate it actually took to completely clog the pick up like that. I would have thought it would take a lot but it seems not.

what I dont like is how big the pickup is. What genius thought a 1"x2" screen was good enough? If crap starts to float around in there, its gonna clog quick! The old style screen/pickup worked great, I want to see GM's tech artical as to why they changed!?

I am starting to see why there are so many problems with the LS1 engines bearings. I took apart a 45k motor and not the best looking bearings in there, but, I have t admit the screen wasnt clogged : / . I really do not think there is enough surface area to suck up all the needed oil. I need a hydrolic flowoligist to chime in .
