Engine Ticking...ONLY on start-up and firts minute of driving
Got a bit of an issue with my 99GTP. I know its not an LS1...but come on guys I need some help! my local GP forum is absolutely useless and havent provided any help. Anyways a bit of history on the car...
has 182k kms or 115k mi and was filled with DOUBLE the nec. amount of oil at 100mi by an idiot mechanic I had taken it to. I ran it for about 500 miles before drainin all the oil and startin from scratch(there was a bit of top end noise(only slight tho). Everything seemed OK after that and I still havent had any significant problems with engine/drivetrain. Anyways the car now has another 15k mi on it and a tick has started to develop when it is cold but then entirely disappears after its been run for a while. the tick will start even if the car has been run, shut off for 20 mins and then restarted and driven. It almost seems like the oil isnt quite reachin the top for a lil. The car doesnt burn much oil, if ANY at all and the car seems a little sluggish than it used to, but nothin crazy. I have been using quaker state 10w-30 since ive owned it, and its been a decent motor oil. As for skeptics, my parents had a 89 cutlass cruiser(3.3L) do 445k kms on quaker with no engine problems whatsoever. I think tho, Its time to either:
-Seafoam or GM Top End Clean the motor
-change motor oils...not to syn tho

Quaker state sucks man. It forms so much damn sludge in a motor it would make you sick. If you want to get that out run 15-40 Rotella T (since thats kinda heavy, let the car warm up fully before you drive) and then change that at around 2-500 miles. If it doesnt stop your oil pickup screen up with filth (very bad) then it will sure as heck clean that motor out!
The reason for Rotella T is its a diesle oil made for semis. It has a SHITLOAD of detergents in it.

any ideas guys....tickin happens i guess, its just wierd that it stops all together after a being run. Another side note is that I WAS puttin in 94 Sunoco, but switched down to 91 Sunoco due to gas prices, but doubt this has any effect on the problem

Its probably caused by the quaker state motor oil starting to sludge up the lifters. They stick a little when cold but when warmed up they free up and run like theyre supposed to. I would dump some sea foam in the oil (something like half a can), run it a couple hundred miles (or until noise quits) then change to mobil 1 or valvoline oil. I am a GM service tech and had bad experience with quaker state/pennzoil and have heard nothing good about either. Thats what i would do.

Change your oil w/castrol or similar. Substitute 1 qt of oil for 1 qt of tranny fluid (dextron 3). Run it about 500-1000 miles and your lifter noise should go away. Tranny fluid is a detergent and it will clean out the lifters. I do that to all my vehicles every 4-5 oil changes. I have no eng trouble out of mine.
Or pull the valve covers and check pushrods. I have heard of them bending it the s/c cars.
