Default Ram Air, stock?/mod

Ok, so I have come accross more than once, a once common free ram air mod... I understood that my car recieved its air through the hood as is, and my lit shows it as opposed to my friends Z28. As mine has an opening in the front that mates to the hood... So my question I suppose is this, why would I need to do a free ram air mod if my car is already gettings its air through its hood? And more so, what the F is this free ram air mod.. All I can find is that it was once common, some ppl are scared of water, others say its no big deal... Some say it sucks too much dirt and makes a distinctive line of it on the filter, others say its no big deal... lol..

So lets have it, share your knowledge

Nothing to be scared of...people have gone through rainstoms and not had a drop of water on the filter.

You will need to change the filter more often though...but no big deal.
