Default Carb setups

For the guys running carburetor setups on your ls1, what transmission are using?
What is driveability on the street like?

Anyone with 402/408 lsx strokers with the carb?
If so what size carb are you running? Driveablity on the street?

I'm going to run a carb on my 408 stroker. I have the Vic Jr. intake and MSD controller. The carb will be a "holley type " vaccum secondary with a proform main body and Quick Fuel baseplate (~800cfm). Tranny is a race prepped turbo 350.

Drivability, this is my fun car... Actually with the temporary Gen 1 355 it isn't too bad. Had to put something in the car to get it driveable. Definitely turns more rpm than my 99 Z28 on the highway.

What size cam are you running in your 408? Why vacuum secondaries and not mechanical ? just curious.

U can see my sig for what I am doing. But I may stick a 4l60e on there for a little bit if I HAVE to and u can buy a box for the shift points. I think it's about $500. I am gonna try my hardest to get a 6 speed in the first place though. I don't know what to go with for a carb yet though.

Cam I believe is ~mid 230's Intake/Exhaust(.050 duration) .580/.585 exhaust. Too cold to go out and look at my pile 'O parts

The reason for vaccum secondaries is that I am building this engine off of parts I can get from auction sites, buddies and buddies of buddies. I wanted to do something different than just open up a catalog and order. A few things I had to get from major vendors, but not much.

The 800 was the biggest carb I could get for a deal at the time. Mechanical secondaries would probably net a few more horses, but the vaccum secondaries are slightly more streetable.

In the end EFI is more streetable than both, but runs into money when converting a non-efi car that dosen't need it's fuel system overhauled.

BTW forget about TBI injection for a LSX stroker. You would have to get an expensive aftermarket 4 injector TBI unit to be able to flow enough to feed the horsepower these engines are capable. Even then there still would be a rpm limit.

I just bought a quick fuel 750 today with mechanical secondaries. Can't wait to get it in.

The Edelbrock ignition is good enough. It has been used in many of the mags for a stand alone ignition controller. From what I understand the only negative with it and the MSD is that it takes a little bit to find the crank postion on start up. May take a full rev. The edelbrock is the MSD minus a few features.

FI cams should work fine. I believe one of the rags had almost 490 hp from a crate LS6. One caveat may be some of the more advanced FI cams. They may not be as good because they don't have to take into account the vaccum nature (abs vaccum and pulsing) of a carb.
