Default How common are spun rod bearings?

How common is it for an LS1 to spin a rod bearing before 100,000 miles? My old 98 spun one at 87000. I am looking to buy another LS1 and was getting curious. How many out of 100 would you say spins a bearing before 100,000 miles.

thanks

Most if not all spun bearings come from people not running enough oil. Spinning the engine way on up there 7000rpms+ and stock oil pump failure. Get a new oil pump, make sure you have oil and don't spin past 6500rpms and you should be fine for a long time. I have a perfectly smooth engine and I have 115,000 miles on my car and it's been cammed for many of those miles.

My car was bone stock, always had the proper amount of oil, mobil one. That said I can not vouch for the previous owners who had the car from birth to 78000. So I can not refute your statement.

welcome to the long term effects of 20 weight oil protection in a high clearance V8. pair it with mobil 1 5W-30's poor consumption protection and you get...a spun rod bearing

fix it and run a better oil and i bet it won't happen again...at least for a long time.

Mobil 1 is too thin.

Try a better oil like German Castrol 0-30

If you search, you will find out, Mobil 1 10-30 is more of a 20wt oil. The "best" oil out there is german castrol 5-30. Most people dont have access to it so they run with M1 0-40.

you mean german castrol 0W-30, not 5W-30. their 5W-30 is not as good as their 0W-30, and i think the 5W-30 is only available at BMW dealerships or something.

GC 0W-30 isn't perfect, either. some people experienced increased piston slap, but it seems to vary based on LS1's. some get it, some don't. the protection is impeccable, however. i get a little cold start tick on GC 0W-30, so next batch i'm gonna try mobil 1 5W-40. they're the only two oils i'd consider running in an LS1 assuming i can find them both. mobil 1 30W's have the protection of water in these high clearance engines. it's like pissing in the crankcase. mobil 1 0W-40, i'm not the biggest fan of as it's a mainstream oil. mobil 1 0W-40 still shears more easily than GC 0W-30 and mobil 1 5W-40, but all their mainstream oils are compromised. still, if you can't find GC 0W-30 and mobil 1 5W-40, mobil 1 0W-40 is a good choice by default. also, consider shell rotella synthetic 5W-40 and amsoil 5W-40 if you have the cash - but only if you can't find GC 0W-30 an M1 5W-40.

People are entirely too picky about their oils. I can almost guarantee that using the factory recommended oil is not going to damage your engine. My father has been building motors for the better part of 40 years and he swears by the cheapest oil you can find. As he says they all have to pass the same SAE specifications in our country. I've ran castrol syntec 10-30 in mine for a while and now I switched to M1 10-30. We'll see how it pans out.
