The search engine is pretty much down. You can search posts from people and it shows most recent posts as of 4 days ago. So I bet this is tied into that.

No, any time there's an inconsistency or even the possibility for there to be one, the slave stops in its tracks and requires manual intervention. Its a MySQL thing, their implementation of replication still has a few flaws.
