Default Arp head bolt Question

Can you reuse them? One of them broke and I might have to take the head off.

Wrong. You cannot reuse the stock head bolts, but you can resuse ARP bolts provided they were torqued properly at install and are not damaged.

+1 You cannot reuse stock head bolts. They are TTY bolts like balancer bolt and should not be reused. Im not saying nobody does but you should not. I also called ARP a week ago and they confirmed that you can reuse bolts and studs.

Ok... yes you CAN reuse the stock head bolts, that's like saying you CAN install a cam 180 degrees out... The stock head bolt are torque to yeild bolts, they don't use typical torque specs but rather angles to stretch the bolt a little bit. If you reuse them, and try to torque them to the angle again, you run the risk of breaking the bolt.

Thats why i said you should not reuse them. I have heard of people dooing stupid **** like welding the headers to the heads, weld the y pipe to the headers etc... It dosent suprise me that some people would reuse the head bolts. I have heard that the stock head bolts are not verry easy to torque anyway, just get some arp bolts.

Just curious, did you use the assembly lube under the bolt head when installing them?

stock head bolts never reuse, torque to yeild ****, use once then throw away. your arp bolts reuse those, they will actually work better and have better clamping force, because they have been stretched already. buy a new bolt you broke, and put it back together.

No I used 30 weight, in the instructions it said either was fine but different torque specs.

i used ARP studs on my motor (regret it, i should have just used stock GM replacement)

honestly, how much is a bolt going to stretch? if you talk to GM they will tell you that LS1 blocks cant be resleved either. my point is that we do lots of stuff that we "arent suppose to do" such as but a huge cam in an otherwise stock motor and produce 400+ rwhp. im sure if you talked to GM they would tell you lots of things you arent suppose to do with these cars/motors

machining a block to fit new sleaves with in tolerance and using bolts that have been pulled out of tolerance are two diffrent things. just because you can't see how much the bolt is OOT doesnt mean it should be reused
