ticking...but only when not abused
if i start it cold let it idle for 5 minutes then drive it easy/like a normal driver it will tick constantly. but i can only hear it from under the car. no tick is heard with the hood popped.
but if i start it cold let it idle for 5 minutes, drive it till it warms up then bring it to redline just once the ticking goes away! whats happening?

Could be a lifter. Had a friend whos mustang did the same thing. To the point where we could beat on it, the noise would go away, few sets of lights of normal driving, noise would return, beat on it again and noise went away again. Started like your though and gradually worsened

I just had my oil analyzed and the person who does told me that carbon will cause this and that I am driving the car too easy. He wants me to run a higher RPM (5th on highway instead of 6th) and do some WOT sprints to see if the noise dissipates. Mine starts about 30 seconds after cold start and goes away after a few minutes though.

Could be this?
It states from GM it self, that the O-ring on the oil pump might be letting in a small amount of air causing the ticking noise. Apparently its very common on 01-02 LS1

Ive replaced the entire top end, heads, cam, pushrods, even lifters twice. I run a catch can now, and used to run breathers. My plugs are clean, I dont have carbon build up. My piston tops are brown but not black when i take off my heads. Im fairly certain its in the lower end. Mine's definately slap.

I like the slap, its like the motors so pumped to go that some little metal man inside it somewhere is pullin his pud.
