Default Stock heads that flow better

After I put some 5.3L ported heads on with my new cam, I noticed that on a cold start white smoke pours out. So.. GREAT! I have a coolant leak. I bet it is on the heads because I bought them used for $200. haha

Anyway I was wanting to ask some of you advanced techies out there:

What makes a set of heads better than others?
Could I port my stock heads to increase a good amount of power?

I really want to buy an MS4 and port my old heads to increase power. My question is this: How much power will the porting really add? What else can I do to the heads to increase power?

Any other tips to increase flow numbers?

I believe ls6 and 5.3L heads have more potential in porting. Their overall design is better. Porting can only fix so much, it can't redesign the heads.

Aftermarket ones (most) are designed better from the beginning. With more flow in mind, they have better designs to begin with.

Also, i think aftermarket ones might be a little more flexible on stuff such as compression ration and such.

hard to go wrong with the ported ls6 heads. Best bang for the buck. Id expect ~30+ HP with a proper setup on that cam.

Anyone have a link to where I can purchase those heads at that price? I definitely can't sell back the 5.3s or my stock 853 LS1 heads. One of my 853s are cracked and one of my 5.3s are cracked. I will probably be hand porting if I do a good job with my 853s as practice. I have a good mentor so I won't be going at it blind.

Another thing: I am aiming for the MS4. Any other cam recommendations? I would love to get about 450rwhp or a mid-to-low 11 second set up. I really want a set up that really feels powerful and pulls hard. I heard the MS4 is a good streetable, although I will street just about anything.

yeah it would cost about $250 for a shop to fix the head. depending on the location of the crack.

I would rather get new heads then fix a crack. I want to put a bigger cam in there anyways and I don't want to fly cut. So the 5.3s are gonna be junked/donated.

Let me know if any of you find a link to those $450 heads.

I'd like to think I got 20~25rwhp from my ported 241's. I'm running a 232/238 cam and it managed to put down 436rwhp with a lid, QTPs, Ran. Tech. Cats, and a Magnaflow muffler. I can't imagine going from a ported 241 to a ported 243 head would net me much more than 5~10rwhp.

Through the end of this week we have our ported 243's with oem 2.00"/1.55" valves and Patriot Gold springs for $995.00 per pair assembled. If you are wanting some stock 243 castings, we can do them with oem valves and springs for $425.00 per pair.
