408 in an 02 z06
I was wanting to do something big with my 02 z06 but since i'm tight on money and can only take thigns in long drawn out step I was trying to figure out the best route for me to go. I was thinking of getting a 408 short block with a cam and putting it with my stock ls6 heads? woud this be an ok setup until down the road I got more parts to really open it up such as heads? Or should I do a heads and cam combo and do the 408 short block down the road? I know i can get 450-500rwhp with the cams and head setup but what can i get with the 408 before doing heads? Thanks for helping me out.

You're talking to the right guy here... I've got stock heads on my 408 for the time being. 244/248 612/615 comp xe-r and I made the numbers in my sig. The cool thing is when you get used to how fast your car is, you still have 50-60 more rwhp to bolt on in heads and intake. I can't wait...

i know you say money is an issue but it would be much easier on you to go ahead and build it right the first time.but close to 470/470 would be a fun ride in a vette, even with the added weight of an iron block but it would be very nice for a set of nice tfs 225 or afr 225.oh yeah, that cam is the one i have going in my 408 also but on a 110 +1

Y dont you just build it, just cuz you buy the short block now doesnt mean you have to install it, do what i did, buy the short block, put it on a stand (look at it everyday) and keep it in a bag. Then when you get some more money buy more stuff, stock it, and keep goin till you have the engine that you want.

well it would actually be a pretty decent amount of time in between me getting a short block 408 and my heads. I was thiking maybe I should do heads and cam and get 4.10 gears instead? Or save a little more and look for a used turbo kit off another vette since i've seen some for about 4k with all the parts to install it. I just can't make up my mind

Ok I narrowed it down to these two choices to be better cost efficient until im' ready to go extreme power. Either heads/cam with 4.10 gears, or doing a nitrous setup with a smaller cam. Cam i want is the TSP magic stick 3 since i've seen really good results with it. Or should I do heads/tsp magic stick and a small shot of nitrous compared to doing a big shot of nitrous and not going crazy on a heads/cam setup. I know i prolly sound confusing right now mubbling on and on but i want something that i can daily drive and i don't have to worry about breaking everytime i get on it. That's why i'm a little worried about the nitrous. give me your opinions guys, i really need help lol.
Quick version: should i do heads/cam with 4.10 or do a nice nitrous setup or mix both? daily drive with occasional "competitive driving" on the streets.

id say H/C swap now MS3 or 4 and keep the gears or if you have to get gears get 3.73s. either one of those cams will work in a 408 it will make killer low end TQ and your rpms will drop for peak power.... henns the 3.73s not 4.10s you will have a more useable powerband with the 3.73s and all the TQ. a "small cam" like those will allso keep you SRC down you wont need 12.5:1 to make power. more like 11:5
search there are a lot of "small cam" 402-408s out there makin good power even better is there driveability and DARE I SAY as a strett DD car GAS MILEAGE!!!!!!!
thats my plan with the my TSP 233-239 cam and a 402. im gonna keep my caM and use my 205 AFR heads. should make sweet power down low... fun for the street. then that dual stage 300 shot for the track!!!!

Not to hyjack the post but in my case I have SLP longtubes on my 408 gutted cats Borla stinger Ported heads flowing 378 CFMs but my cam is a mere 228/232 600/598 114 with a Ls2 90 mm TB and a Ls2 intake Oh yeah and a little bit of help of an underdrive pulley with 42 lb injectors and a future good Hp Tuners tune by Jerry Onks...any guesses with a small cam as such?

So everyone agrees a h/c combo will be the best route? Since i've decided doing the whole 408 is out of my price range for the moment, but i want something fast and reliable.

HUMMMMM well maybe less your DCR will make for killer TQ but might not be enough cam for high RPM power. 480 might be high but you do have 90mm TB i saw a test showed the LS6 made more power than the LS2 same i think as a 78fast and only the 90 fast beat the LS6. i think they tested like 7 intakes.
