That is an EGR valve. It recirculates exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold back to the intake to further burn any unburt fuel in the exhaust (emissions), and to reduce the combustion chamber temperature at light throttle cruise by reducing the oxygen content of the A/F mixture entering the cylinder (this reduces the chance of detonation with the lean factory preset part-throttle A/F ratio). You can remove the entire system but you will need block off plates for the hole in the exhaust manifold and intake manifold where the EGR tubes used to be. Many people here remove the system without issues.

And yes, it will throw a code. You will need tuning to delete the code.

Can't you tune it out, unplug it and it'll be OK, just not look all so fancy like having a block off?

Sure, but why? The biggest reasons people ditch the EGR is to:

- ...clean up the engine bay by removing the components,
- ...pull the tube from the intake so it's not an obstruction,
- ....and get the weight savings of removing the system.

If you're not going to pull it all off, then you might as well just leave it working/active.

the vinci tuner doesn't actually turn codes off. it widens the parameters that would trip the code. it shouldn't come on. no gaurantees. i've had friends use the programmer with cats removed and rear o2s and such and no codes got tripped.
